Download for FREE the latest version of Fresh Diagnose from
.

(After you register, you will receive an email with User IDs and Registration Codes for several different Fresh Devices programs. Be sure to scroll down the page to find the Reg Code for Fresh Diagnose. It took me a while to figure out I was typing in the code for the wrong program into the Registration Field for Fresh Diagnose.)

Run the Display Adapter benchmarks (with your display set at 1280x854 and 32-bit color) and post your results here. Be sure to list the model/CPU speed of your VPR-Matrix computer, your operating system, and the version of the NVIDIA GeForce 4 video driver you're using.

For example, here are my benchmarks using FreshDiagnose v6.40:

185-A5 notebook
P4-1800 Mhz
Windows XP Home
Video driver version 4487

Random Pixels 700 KPixels/s
Lines 67,666 Lines/s
Circles 19,476 Circles/s
Rectangles 83,067 Rectangles/s
Texts 901,186 Chars/s
Floodfills 1,471,360 KPixels/s
Draw 40,925 KPixels/s

Unfortunately you can't cut & paste the values, but there are just 7 to type :(

I'll be curious to see if the latest versions of the NVIDIA GeForce video driver really increase performance compared to the original drivers included on the machine.

Where can I download this Dell driver at?

Right here:

http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Type.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&Category=6&OS=WW1&OSL=EN&SvcTag=&SysID=INS_PNT_P4_8500&DeviceID=3996

You will have to replace one line in the inf file in order to get the proper 1280x854 display size. Follow the instructions in this thread:

http://forums.designtechnica.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2149

AND BE SURE TO install the driver manually. Don't use the setup program included with the driver download.

I just finished downloading and installing version 5.3.0.3 of the NVIDIA GeForce 420 Go 32M video drivers for my 185-A5 here. (http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/ohau-estate/modifyinf.htm) If you download the driver, don't forget to also download the modified .INF file as well and overwrite the one included in the archive to get 1280x854. And don't use the install program included in the archive - install the driver manually.

Here are the old/new benchmark values after upgrading from v4487 to v5303:

VPR-Matrix 185-A5 notebook
P4-1800 Mhz
Windows XP Home
Video driver version 4487 vs. 5303

Random Pixels 700 KPixels/s (4487) VS. 666 KPixels/s (5303)
Lines 67,666 Lines/s VS. 67,000 Lines/s
Circles 19,476 Circles/s VS. 19,046 Circles/s
Rectangles 83,067 Rectangles/s VS. 84,499 Rectangles/s
Texts 901,186 Chars/s VS. 882,323 Chars/s
Floodfills 1,471,360 KPixels/s VS. 1,365,440 KPixels/s
Draw 40,925 KPixels/s VS. 46,249 KPixels/s

Performance-wise, it's seems to be a wash between v4.4.8.7 and v5.3.0.3, but it is considerably faster than the original video driver (v3.0.8.2) that was included with the laptop. Supposedly there are some bug-fixes in the later version, but who knows what new bugs will be introduced as well. So far, however, driver v5.3.0.3 appears to be working A-OK.

Give it a shot and see what happens :D

Happy Holidays.
