Help, I need to buy a laptop tomorrow and I thought I was ready to buy the toshiba, then I saw the new emachines m5312. They have all iof the same components, but the emachine has an extra usb port, the adm processor and the widescreen, The price difference is only $100 at best buy. I hace heard that the emachines are new to the notebook market and are returned more often with problems then the toshiba. Can anyone help me make the right choice??? thankx

What do you plan to do with the notebook? What sort of apps will you run? Any games? What kind of battery life are you looking for? Is that extra usb port really needed?
I doubt you'll notice a performance difference between the emachines and toshiba. I can tell you that the amd processor will be running hotter than the pentium, so you may take that into consideration if your thinking about using the notebook on your lap. If your planning on playing any 3d games I'd say go with the emachines because of it's better graphics card - that's if you play games..
----EDIT-----
I see that compusa has the toshiba listed, shows battery life "up to 2 hours" - I don't know about the Emachines..

I purchased an HP laptop from Bestbuy about a month ago, after owning it for less then two weeks had to return the computer. They had me take home the same model brand new.
After about another 2 weeks realized that the dvd drive did not work right so had to return the computer again this time they gave me the choice to pick out a new laptop.... I was browsing through and found the emachines m5312, and heard from alot of friends that own emachines desktops that they never have a problem they are good computers so i picked up the computer and have had absolutely no problems the wifi works excellently.... I think that it is just the greatest laptop for the price.... The only problems are the hdd speed but that can be replaced with another one if you want and the integrated video card with shared memory but even that is no big deal if you are not using it for graphic intensive games....

I would recomend the emachines. I bought an emachines m5310 and I am satisfied with my purchase. The computer is fast (for a laptop) and the screen is great for watching dvds. I have Windows XP Pro and Mandrake 9.2 installed and both operating systems work great. There is one problem that I have been having. In some high poly 3d games the cpu get too hot and the machine shuts off. It doesn't shut down, it shuts off. This is a pain and I can't play the games becouse of it. Also, the right speaker goes on and off for no reason. It was off for a month one time. Overall this is a fine laptop for it's price. It has the same hardware as many compac, dell, and hp computers. I will keep this laptop for another year before I can afford something more powerful. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DECISION.

of the laptops currently at Best Buy:
around the 1000 price point:
Emachines 5312 hands down. 1249 retail with a fluctuating MIR between 100 and 250, the performance you get is astonishing.
2400+ mobile cpu, 60gb (4200rpm) hd, 512mb ddr pc2100, ati igp w/ 32 shared, 15.4 wxga screen, thin form factor, dvd/cdr, xp home, 3 usb 2.0, 1 firewire, 1 parallel, 1 svideo, 1 vga, and 1 pcmcia slot, and integrated 54g wireless (56k/nic also).
The only thing it doesn't offer is a dvd burner, Intel technology and dedicated video memory.
The others in this price range are all Celerons, with the exception of the Compaq 2195 which has all the same features of the emachines with a few diffs, mainly: a 2500+, smaller hd, no widescreen, bigger/bulkier case.
Plus, I generally HATE HP/Compaq laptops. (I hate Sony's too)
The only HP/Compaq I'd own are the Centrino models.
The HP 3010 is probably my fave laptop at BB (not on CTO).
Centrino/512/60/dvd+r/15.4wxga/ati9200agp<32dedicated>for around 2k before MIR.
The Compaq 1050 (special after thankgiving) was a centrino with 40, 256, 15.4,dvd-rom for clost to 1k after MIR.
The Compaq x1030 is almost identical to the HP 3010, save the dvd burner.
Then, if you are seeking a desktop replacement, there is nothing better IN STORE than the Toshiba "S" series. Offering up to a 17" wxga screen, with HT P4s and multi-format DVD drives (DVD-R/DVD-RAM), with 32mb dedicated nvdia graphics, and the option of a tv tuner and WMCE. They also come with 80gb hard drives, and run their memory in dual channel.
The ACER 2910 we USED to carry was a downright steal though.
Centrino/DVD-R/15.4wxga/512/40 for 1299 with a 200 MIR. Only negative was the integrated intel video, but still.
The best laptop you can get at BB, is through the CTO kiosks.
HP 7000 series, either 17 or 15.4" uxga, 128mb nvidia 5650/ati 9600 upgradeable vid, 7200rpm hitachi hd (up to 80gb), dvd+r, and your choice of the HT p4 up to 3.2Ghz OR Centrino up to 1.7ghz.
There should be an AMD64 lappy available soon through CTO.
Don't even get me started on the T6000, that is the best computer BB has carried in a long time. Desktop though.
That is until the Compaq comes out with the Cooler Master case......I'll let you think about that one ;)
