I just got my 220A5 today and I'm off to a bad start. I did the screen buzz fix and stripped one of the screws. Good thing is that it's fixed and hopefully there won't be any reason to open it again.
My concurrent problems are 1) the very low volume sound output even with the volume knob up, the player max vol, and the audio volume control settings maxed out; 2)the constant mechanical/static noise whenever i perform any operation, even moving my USB mouse pointer across the screen; and 3) the unbelievably loud and slow CDRW/DVD drive.
The last one I figure is just something I have to deal with, but the first two i think may actually be defects. Any suggestions?

I suggest taking it back and getting the Gateway 200XL instead, or if you want a Widescreen, get the HP/Compaq X1000 laptop. VPR Matrix might not be around too much longer and your chance for tech support will go out the window.

Well, it's the day after and I took the notebook back today. They agreed that it shouldn't have been making that noise (not the screen buzz) and they gave me a full refund. Unfortunately, they didn't carry any of the 220a5's in the store and when I went to order a new one on line, they were sold out...bummer. From what I did use of the 220A5 yesterday, it has a blazing fast processor, a slow and loud CDRW/DVD drive, and now it doesn't matter anyways, cuz I don't get one.

Do you absolutely need to have a widescreen laptop?

Here is a link to the Gateway 200XL: http://reviews.designtechnica.com/review488.html

It is in my opinion one of the best laptops on the market, especially if you will be traveling.
