Hey folks. I'm new to this forum so if this question's been up before I apologize
(couldnt find any threads about it)
I own a nomad zen xtra (60gb) mp3 player and I was surprised by the
exelent sound quality of it so now I'm looking for a pair of good and
atleast somewhat portable head phones that doesn't drain my battery in 2 hours.<--*important*
I will not by a portable amp for my headphones
so please have that in consideration too.
price: about $100
I've looked into:
sennheiser hd 497 (dont drain much battry)
sennheiser px 200 (portable)
koss portapro (classic)
koss KSC-35 (cheap)
If you know any good head phones that would fit my purpose please post it here =)
thanks in advance!
Ps. I own a pair of sennheiser hd475 (no longer made) great sound but not very portable.
for those of you who kow the model. that's my reference. well they did sound great
untill my dog one day misstaked em for food :P

I would go for the Sennheiser HD497. It's a good combination in terms of usuability and price...I use it for gaming (makes the sounds on Call of Duty rock), for my Zen NX and CDs. The only little drawback to it is that it's not collapsible for easy storage which isn't a problem for me, personally. :)

What will you be using the headphones for - activity -wise? I assume not jogging. Walking, bed, gaming, etc.. Do you want open or closed (hear the outside world)?
If you have the 60GB model, I would do it some justice and get either some Shure E2Cs or Etymotic ER4Ps. But are around your price range, and are excellent closed canalphones. Easy to store, too. It you want regular earbuds, the Senn MX500 (I think that's the model number - whatever the highest Senn model is) are supposed to be excellent and around $80.

ps-I'm considering the same purchase. How is the interface on the unit?

mostly for commuting, walking etc. no radical movements will be done ;) I havent ruled out either closed or open head phones. I am a bit sceptical about in ear phones though. I want good sound but I'm just a poor student who just spent all his money on a mp3 player ;P
also I dont think a portable mp3 player will use the potential the more expensive head phones have. at home I always use the speakers.

the sounds great (all reviews I've seen says it's the best sound by far of all mp3players out there), the interface works good but could be a bit better. however they release new firmware that adds more features and options now and then. I'm also using mine to store data files. I live in 2 towns so it's the perfect gadget for me. I stronlgy recommend it. it's not that pricey either, big plus

I don't think a portable MP3 player is going to really use the full potential of a nice $300 set of cans, but I think for anything leading up to around $100 you'll see a significant difference. After that all bets are off.
I would check out the Shure E2Cs and see if you like that style. I believe they have a 30 satisfaction guarantee and 2 year warrenty. Also, take a look at the Headroom. They have a great return policy, too. http://headroom.headphone.com
