I have a sony minidisc MZ-N710. I have loaded the standard ATRAC software onto my windows XP PC.
I am administrator and my kids are users.
The problem is the software wont run in a user invironment, only an administrator environment.
I do not want my kids to have admin rights on the PC
How do I st up permissions on my PC so I can overcome this

Either give your kids power user rights or on the sony program folder give them the equivalent of admin rights under properties, security. You may have to turn off inheritable rights under the advanced tab to get the settings to change. if you need to turn this off select to copy the rights from the parent then make the changes.

Pretty strange to have to have admin rights. Typically only need admin rights if installing or writing to a system folder.

Here is a way around that should work:

In xp, you can run an application as another user.
1) Login with your kids account,
2) Right-click the EXE, and click on the menu item "Run As"

This will bring up a dialog where you can login to your account and run the application as yourself. That should work.

Ive aleady tried this and it works. I can get the software to run in my sons limited account by right clicking on the sonic stage shortcut on his desktop , selecting properties and using run with the following credentials command and then type in my password but I dont want to reveal my admin password because my kids will mess with the PC and install rubbish!
If instead of the shortcut I right click on the exe and use "run as" will this make it work without me revealing my password? IE once set up once will it work in th efuture without entering password each time? I have also right clicked on the sony stage folders and "shared" them
I have been advised to set him up as a power user but I have no options available for me to do that. how do I do this in XP professional?

As admin right click on My Computer and choose manage. Select Local Users and groups- Users. Double click on the account you want to change and choose the Member Of tab. Click add. Type "Power Users" in the enter the object names to select box and click ok. Then click apply and ok. The next time the user logs in they will have power user rights.

If you give him power user rights though, they will be able to install software, which is what he wants to avoid. You know, I'm not sure if Run As is sticky, but you can always try and see..
