Hi there,

Due to popular demand, I've created a Yahoo group for our beloved Yepp YP-55 player and uploaded the newest 5.7 firmware there.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/yeppmp3/

Get the firmware on the files area of the group and please post messages on how you like/dislike the new features.

Thanks Brian K. for the firmware and your kind support.

Cheers to all,

-Benton

Excellent!!!!

Can you clarify the instructions:

1) Make sure you've installed the YP-55 software off the CD. You'll need the YP-55 Upgrade program.

2) Extract the attached zip file to the YP-55 directory.

- Can you tell me exactly what I need to type into the box?

Is there a reason for doing it this way, rather than just running the firmware after its been unzipped, without relying on the original disc?

Are there any bad points of 5.7? I pressume there is no going back to an earlier firmware version is there? The text displayed on the YP-55 after the update is still all in English isn't it.

Brilliant Job

Thanks

Simon

bentonquest, why don't you just post the link to the download in here? There is no reason to create a yahoo group when our site gets enough visiors. If there is a hosting issue, e-mail me and we will be more than happy to host the file here.

You type in the folder name where the Samsung software was installed off the CD. Something like C:\Program Files\Samsung\YP-55. It's easier if you just browse to it (saves typing :))

There are no executable files inside the zip container. The program that actually performs the firmware upgrade was installed by the CD setup program. It's called UPDATE, should be in your Start menu.

5.7 works really great for me so far, I don't think you'll want to go back. But earlier firmware version is available on the Samsung web site, just browse somewhere else on this forum for the url.

Yes, of course.

Thanks Benton

Managed to work out the bit about where to extract to. My only other concern was regarding the language, which you've now answered - thanks.

It's an amazing coincidence that I should stumble accross these forums and your link (which you've only just set up) only the day after I got my YP-55v. Am delighted so far, apart from a small prob with FM (see further down).

I'm from the UK and we have a limited number of MP3 players available here. I got this one brand new from a guy in the US on ebay.

I'd been searching for hours looking for newer firmware (mine's currently on 1.2). There are no updates available at all from www.samsung.com or www.samsungyepp.com The only firmware I could find was on their belgian site - and that was only 1.5

Been to the Korean site also. Could see mentions of firmware in plenty of places, but nothing to click on.

Have any of you had any problems with your unit since purchase? The only problem I've had so far has been with FM. Yesterday, when I tried to select FM, the screen went blank and no buttons would operate. The only way I could get it working again was by taking the battery out. I checked the battery on a test meter and found it to be low (although the indicator on the YP55 didn't suggest it was low). After putting new battery in I got the FM ok.

Today, I had another problem with FM. It would play FM and search manualy ok, but if I held the [wow] button to enable 'auto preset', it switched off within a couple of seconds. The unit then powered on again by itself and began playback of MP3.

I am hoping that this isn't a fault, as it's going to be more awkward for me to get repair/replacement from UK.

I wondered if FM functions require a certain amount of memory available for it to work, as I had only .06mb left?

There seems to be an awful lot of reconditioned YP-55v's for sale through ebay. Has there been an unusually large amount of faulty units returned to Samsung I wonder?

Emailed support@samsungyepp about firmware and FM problem, but haven't heard anything - anyone else had good/bad service from them?

Thanks to everyone and especially benton.

All the Best

Simon

Hi Simon,

Glad it worked for you. I purchased my YP-55 and later hesitate on opening the package because after the purchase I discovered it didn't support folder navigation and "bookmark" mode (i.e., for eBooks)

Then I got the new firmware by e-mail (thanks Brian) and after the upgrade I realized I had the perfect little flash player on my hands. Glad I didn't return it :)

Regarding the FM tuner, I haven't experienced any of the problems you mention.

Oh, and before I knew about firmware 5.7, I emailed Samsung to ask if the player supported folder navigation and bookmark, they responded quickly but say that it didn't. I guess U.S. guys are not aware of the Korean 5.7 revision. :(

Cheers,

-Benton:cool:

Ok here is the new firmware update, thanks to BentonQuest. We are hosting it here on the site. Would everyone like it if I created a Samsung specific forum for you guys?

OK here are the instructions for the upgrade. Thanks again, Brian!

1) Make sure you've installed the YP-55 software off the CD. You'll need the YP-55 Upgrade program.
2) Extract the attached zip file to the YP-55 directory. When it asks to overwrite, say Yes.
3) Plug in one end of the USB cable (I suggest the end that goes to the computer first).
4) Now, hold down the play button, and BEFORE it turns on, plug in the other end. Continue holding down the play button.
5) If all goes well, your computer should recognize that a new device is attached. It'll be called "Player Recovery Device", or something to that effect.
6) Now, run the YP-55 Upgrade program. It may flash up some "New Hardware Detected" screens... just continue through those until you're able to click "Start" for the upgrade program

Note, you'll lose everything on your player by doing this (including radio presets). And that's it!

It took some playing around to figure out the new controls. Essentially, you can enter the "Navigation" mode and "Playlist" mode the same way you would go from Music to Radio. In Navigation mode, you can search through folders you've created (Vol button), dive into the folder (Menu button), and start the some from there (Play button). If you press the Menu button while a song is showing, you'll notice it changes a little icon next to the song title. Doing this assigns the song to a playlist (you'll notice it's created a fav.txt file in the player root directory.) To play all the songs that you've selected for the playlist, enter playlist mode. It works just like the regular music mode, except it's limited to those songs you've selected.

And that's it, I think! There's a Lyric option in the settings menu, but I think that requires some external program, which I haven't bothered looking for.

Good luck getting it going!

Hi simon1,
I had your same problems. I'm from Italy (It's just yp-55v at 199 euro here) and.... I've bought yp-55v on ebay. It's arrived 10 days ago from Orlando.

Fortunately there aren't any problems with FM since I've upgraded firmware last week!

Sorry for my bad english!

Sorry for my bad english!

I discovered that the problem with FM was down to memory available (not the firmware or anything else).

When I tried searching for radio stations, the unit powered itself off within a few seconds - I had only 0.6 mb available.

When I tried later, with 1.8mb available - it worked no problem.

This should have been mentioned in the User Manual.

Why did you buy from ebay (Orlando), if it was available in Italy Was it simply the price.

Sorry, I confused the tags. I wanted to say that in Italy there is just YP-55H at 199€ (on ebay I paid 98€ for YP-55V).

When I had problems with FM, free memory was 56MB (!?!?)

Do you know something about YP-55VR & YP-55HR?
I know about capacity (128 & 256MB) but what are the differences from YP-55V?

simon1

Yeah, I've seen HR and VR versions mentioned, but don't know how these are different to the H & V we already know.

Makes you wonder if the reason Samsung has been so secret about firmware 5.7, is because that's what the HR and VR versions are (ie VR is a V + 5.7 / HR is H + 5.7).

Did you know there's been a YP-55i, it was 192mb.

Don't think much of Samsung's service support - I emailed them on 20/01 about firmware/FM probs, still no reply!

By the way, your English is good!

The price you paid was very good - equals GB £68. Was it 'brand new' ?

I paid $179 = £99 = EU 142 including shipping from the US. It was 'brand new' and bought as a 'buy it now' option.

aldicora
01-23-2004, 09:31 AM
It was "brand new", of course.
I bought on ebay on 15/12 winning a normal bid (not "buy it now").
Total payment has been:
120$ (price) + 26$ (international shipping) + 5% (taxes)=153$ = 122€

Days ago through thousand of ideograms on Korean site I read the word "recharge" near YP-55VR.
"R" maybe means recharge??

What Could it mean? It works also with AC adapter? Is it possible to use rechargeable batteries?
We hopefull waiting for a Korean boy...

I think I understand.

It sound like the HR & VR units will be shipped with an AC adapter. This will plug into the unit and power it straight from the mains. A rechargeable battery inside the unit would be charged whilst the adapter was plugged in.

It makes sense, I suppose.

I think you should start again from scratch.

1. Remove the Yepp software from your PC (use 'Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel).
2. Reload the driver software from your original disc.
3. Download the 5.7 firmware.
4. Unzip the firmware to 'YP-55' folder (use the browse facility: 'YP-55' is located within Samsung, which is located in Program Files).
5. Restart the PC.

Try again.

You may need to perform the actual update of the player twice (like I did) to get it work 100%

New features: Playlist and Navigation modes, lyrics support.

For the first two: Essentially, you can enter the "Navigation" mode and "Playlist"
mode the same way you
would go from Music to Radio. In Navigation mode, you can search through
folders you've created (Vol button), dive into the folder (Menu button),
and start the some from there (Play button). If you press the Menu button
while a song is showing, you'll notice it changes a little icon next to the song
title. Doing this assigns the song to a playlist (you'll notice it's created a fav.txt file in the player root directory. To play all the songs that you've selected for the playlist, enter playlist mode. It works just
like the regular music mode, except it's limited to those songs you've selected.

Look somewhere else on this forum for a thread on lyrics.

Cheers,

-Benton

For the last time:

I quote exactly the yp-55 manual:

"Connect to the USB port on your PC using the
USB cable or adapter while holding the play button
on the main body. If you press the Play button
more than 5 seconds, the “Player Recovery
Device” message is displayed on Device Manager"

In other words:
1-Start the upgrading program
2-Connect Usb cable to PC
3-Hold the "Play/pause" button (Don't release it!!) and immediately later connect yp-55 to the other of usb cable.
4-Don't release until something happens on your Pc

later, I quote from manual:
"If you do not release Quick Download, you cannot proceed to upgrade."

Bye

I am thinking of buying the YP-55. I have a question though, that I haven't been able to find an answer to. On the YP-55, is it possible to edit your playlist, or is there some software you have to download. Someone please reply soon. Thanks.

Since 5.7 still comes up as the newest version of YP-55 firmware (this page on google search) after a year of being out, that I thought I should just point out to people that firmware version 7.300 is out and is now the latest version for the YP-55.
