According to Samsung, their players support 2X MP3 technology:

"2X MP3 - MP3 Compression technology that allows you to downsize your MP3 files via supplied software"

Has anyone tried this? Any comments?

Cheers,

I was writing that 2X mp3 technology doesn't work with yp-55 when I found on amazon.com a page that supports its combatibility.
However I'm not so sure till I see it.
This because all Samsung's officials sites (I looked them a lot, i.e. Australia, US, Europe, Korea, China, Japan and maybe something else) when speak about 2xMp3 are telling about yp-300, yp-700, yp-780, etc etc. (not yp-55)

Unfortunately I can't find any links to converting program.

However I think it's important making some considerations about 2xMp3:

* In west countries is called 2xMp3, in east countries (Korea, japan, etc) is more famous like "Super mp3".
It's the same thing!!

* 2xMp3 not allow to you storing more files at 128kbs but you have to convert songs by the "wanted" progam

*i.e. is an other audio codec

*2xMp3 is Samsung trade mark technology and you can use it just on yepp player.

in other words:

Why would I choose 2xMp3 codec if there are some codecs (Ogg Vorbis, Mp3pro (I use it), wma) making the same thing working with Winamp, Musicmatch JB, Media player (...) too????

I'm hoping to express my reasons clearly.

waiting for answers, regards

Thanks for the info Aldicora. I think we want 2X MP3 because we want to save space on our YP-55 (not on our computers) and the YP-55 does not support Ogg nor MP3Pro.

Too bad the links for this software are missing, should be worth a try.

It's evident!!

the YP-55 does not support Ogg nor MP3Pro.

I'm sorry but you are wrong.
All my mp3's collection is Mp3pro is at 64 Kbs. (I use Nero Plugin to convert).
I haven't any problem with my yepp.
When I bought it I checked up very well about it.
The only thing you could tell me is that Mp3pro isn't freeware (however there are freeware encoder like Thomson, RCA, etc)
Otherwise Ogg is freeware if I well remember (I don't use it)
I can't confirm but maybe time ago I read that yepp supports Ogg too.

In this way I transfer mp3s straight to device without converting them in 2xMp3.

bye

Yes, MP3 players can also play MP3 Pro, but there is a loss of quality in the high frequencies because of the way MP3 Pro is encoded. From Thomson.net:

"When making an mp3PRO file, the new mp3PRO encoder splits audio recordings into two parts. One part analyzes the low frequency band information and encodes it into a normal mp3 stream. This allows the encoder to concentrate on less information and allows it to do a better job of encoding. This also maintains complete compatibility on old mp3 players. The second part analyzes the high frequency band information and encodes it into a part of the mp3 stream that is normally ignored by old mp3 decoders. New or upgraded mp3PRO decoders will tap into this part of the stream and put the two bands back together, resulting in the full audio bandwidth."

No, unfortunately it does not.

firstable i have to correct myself: my mp3pro are at 80 Kbps (not 64Kbps).

Yepp doesn't supports Ogg? That's a great pity. It's probably ( I hope) it will work with a new firmware release in the next future

about codecs:

You are right about the quality but I can sure you that the loss of quality isn't so high.
My benchmarks for choosing codec are:
40% Quality
40% Compatibility
20% File dimension (and so bitrate)

So on my point of view the compatibility is very important (If my friend wants a mp3 of mine, What I have to do? give him the converting program? I should convert files for him?)
Moreover I have an other mp3 player
and the most important thing: I'm lazy (aren't you....?) Hurrah for the LAZINESS!!
All my dubts should falling down if someboby tell me that 2XMP3 is supported by rest of the world but I don't believe it.
However I'm not interesting to keep on a discussion about the best codec

2XMP3:

However I'm still looking for the "2XMP3 program".
I think to know the program name. The matter is that it exist just for yp-300 & yp-700.
I found a version very heavy (21 MB!), it could be neutral.
I will be more precise tomorrow because i'm going to download it tonight.

2XMP3: new chapter

Now I'm almost sure that "Super Mp3" doesn't work with yp-55.
I explain myself better by few points:

- A lot of yepp players need a particular software. It's the "Yepp explorer". This program comes with an utility to convert 2xmp3 files.
- There isn't just one "yepp explorer" release. It seems that each model has own version.
For example: YP-E series needs "yepp explorer" (yp-E dition), YP-780 the "yepp explorer" (yp-780 edition)
Did you understand?
Fine, the story doesn't end so.
- I download the yp-300 "yepp explorer". After the installation it ask for the device yp-300. So you can't cheat it!!
- Just some new version of yepp explorer supports 2XMP3 (or super mp3, it's the same as I just said) (surely version for yp-780, yp-700 and the others newest models)
- I found some yepp explorer on samsung's official sites. All versions take about 3 Mb (more or less)
- I couldn't find any web page saying: "Yp-55 supports 2xmp3 format" expressly.

Eventually it's probably that yp-55 can playing 2xmp3 files but there isn't the converting program for it

BUT....:

- there is webpage on SamsungUsa server that says " yepp players supports 2x mp3 technology". But don't says which models.
- Some sites ( however I don't trust them) claim that yp-55 comes with a cd containing "yepp explorer". Maybe do you have it? I think it's a joke!

and now I need your help:

I discovered a korean samsung site too, it has an english section: http://www.bluetek.co.kr/english/default.asp
On that server there is a "suspicious" file:

http://www.bluetek.co.kr/english/support/download/download_down.asp?seq=56&file=01

It's the "yepp explorer" but the webpage doesn't specify for which yepp models it is.
It's much more heavy than the other versions I just saw (it's 21.17 Mb) and so... maybe it works with all versions, I don't know, I hope it.

Every time I try to download the transfer falls down after few kilobytes. The server doesn't support the resuming!!

And so it's very important if you should downloading it. Maybe your line is better that mine.

it's official: YP-55 DOESN'T SUPPORT 2X MP3 (SUPER MP3)!!

If you have any doubts look at

there is an easy understanding table that explains everything
