I am trying to network two computers in the same room, on Computer 1 I have two nic cards, one connected to the internet, the other directly connected to computer 2 by way of a crossover cable, now, i can see and browse computer 2 from comp.1 but cannot see/browse comp1 from comp.2. I have replaced the nic card on comp 2, both nics are on the same subnet, and same workgroup. Also I can ping comp.2 from Comp.1 but not the other way around, i was wondering if It might be a software problem, both computers are running Windows XP

Are both computers running the same version of Windows XP? I know I have trouble having computers see each other if one is XP home and the other is XP corporate.
I would also run the home networking wizard on computer 2 to see if that will help.

Have you enabled file sharing on computer 2?

Any particular reason why you are using computer 1 as the gateway computer instead of just using a switch, hub or router?

if you are still there, no I have not enabled file sharing, and the "gateway" is the type of computer,e.g ibm, dell, compaq...

also i had used a router in my configuration, set both of my nic cards to get dynamic ip addresses, which they did from the router, but again I could see one comp2 from comp1 but i could not see comp1 from comp2

Hm...try to enable file sharing and set your hard drive to share
See if that works?
Set comp 1 to file share...
also you might want to set a Network location.
