Hi all - I've searched everywhere for instructions on how to open the case for a toshiba satellite 1405 s172 with no luck.

After unscrewing the screws on the bottom of the laptop, the sides, front and back can easily be opened, but the top is still attached somehow in the center (inside the machine, underneath the keyboard.

HELP!
Thanks,
Matz

usually laptop keybords will pop out to reveal more chasis screws try there.

Yeah - that's the case in most of them, but not in this one. In fact, once the screws are removed from the back, the top "almost" comes off, with the exception of the center where it's still stuck.

Look for anything, Stick, label, rubber feet, to hide a screw.

This could also be a security feature. Its a secret to remove.

Sorry for the late reply, but I used to work for TAIS, specifically in their Laptop RMA dept. This is what I did all day, dismantle and repair laptops, with that said, if I remember correctly, I believe the panel which houses the power button, etc.., should snap right off. Underneath it you'll find a few screws which attach the cover to the base. Also, check under the machine, remove the battery, screws are also hidden here. Check under the NIC adapter, memory, touch pad, and also remove the screw which holds the cd/dvd drive in place. Once it is removed, you may find other screws which attach the cover & base. I'm going off of memory, but I'm sure if all of these bases are covered, you should be ok.

I have a 1415 that I have taken apart. If you pop off the panel where the power button is like 323GSR stated you will be able to find the screws that hold down the keyboard. There should be three. Once you remove them, the keyboard should come out easily. Under the keyboard is the screw you are looking for.

Try this link:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/manuals/maintenance/

It will take you to a list of many detailed manuals for toshiba laptops. Im nearly sure that your laptop is one of them. There are full instructions for laptop mainteance (disassemble) at that site.

Hope I've helped.

P.S. If you ever come accross a Toshiba A40 mainteance/ disassemble manual please tell me.

Wayne
