View Full Version : unable to detect internet settings
I have a cable modem and a router with 3 computers hooked up. Recently one of those computers was unable to access the internet (can not detect internet settings). If I move the computer to another line (room), same problem, no access the other 2 work fine. Brought the computer into work and its able to access internet there. Took it to a friends house, same internet provider and it works there too, just not at my home. Decided to reformat the hard drive and clear out everything, still unable to access internet. Finally went out and purchased a new ethernet card and still not working.Help?

Reset your router and check its settings, returning them to the original settings if necessary.
Unpluged router for about 10 minutes, didn't help.
How do I do a reset through the software?
When I do a winipconfig to try and access my gateway address, I can't. I get zero's. It will not let me do a "release all or renew all"?

Check your tcp/ip settings and make sure you have dhcp switched on. Is this Windows 98?
What is your connection?
USB, network card, coax, what???
OS?
I would suggest changeing cables... Its easy to crush them, or a mouse/pet eat one. And its an easy check...

How many ports are on your router? Unplug the other two computers from it and just leave this one plugged in, does it work now?

To reset your router - there will be a little pushbutton that you have to push with a pin or paperclip or something that can fit in the hole. You could always RTFM as I'm sure it says it there.
Look at your advanced settings for your internect connection properties on your computer and see if a default gateway is entered. If the gateway is not the address of your router, that is your problem.
And... did you try other ports on your router for this computer?

What about clicking on your network connections and making aure your Windows XP FireWall is turned off?
Let him check his cables first...
ALSO did it work before?
Its a network card.
I am using windows me on the computer thats not working and xp on the other two.
The router is a d-linx 4 output port device and yes I have switched cables around.
I am at work now, when I get home I am going to look for the reset button and software, thanks guys, I'll let you know?
ME kinda sucks... MS dont even support it anymore.
I really think its a connection(hardware problem).
You said it works at your friends and at work, but not at home.
Hey guys thanks for the help, it was the router. Reset router originally and all 3 computers didn't work. powered down computers, modem and router. Repowered in reverse sequence and all computers worked. Thanks again!:D
