As I expected, Apple is looking at IBM's Power PC 4 CPU, a 64-bit design, for its future needs.

Story here.http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,543317,00.asp

The processor, dubbed, the GigaProcessor Ultralite (GPUL), is a light version (think Celeron) of IBM's industrial heavyweight PPC4 that is found in some of IBM's most powerful server, including the Regatta.

Hopefully for Apple, if this works out, Apple will finally be able to compete in the future 64-bit arena, to say nothing of increasing performance which is sorely lacking of late with Motorola's G4 CPU.

I wouldn't think celeron when comparing this cpu. The only comparison the article says that mentions celeron is when comparing the size of the "GigaProcessor Ultralite" (GPUL).

Its a baby of their server Power4 chip, which any desktop user does not need.

This will be excellent competition for Intel/AMD procs.

I'm still eager to see if Apple will ever release their x86 version of OS X.

A good friend of mine that used to work for Apple says that they have always built an x86 version of OS X along side the PPC builds "because they can". I would buy it, even if it meant buying a proprietary Apple x86 machine.

So what is the status of this? I have talked to several people at Intel that believe Apple will be switching over to the x86 architecture. Could Intel CPU's be powering the next Apple computers?
