Hey all,
I just bought a 200a5 used, and I'm thrilled with it. However, the owner set a BIOS password and has unfortunately forgotten it. Can anyone help me out?

Have a good day,
Kurt

try to push the little reset pin hole on the bottom of the laptop next to the ram.

That just works like a plain old reset button. Resetting the BIOS PW can only be done by pulling the CMOS battery.

The damn CMOS battery is soldered to the motherboard. Sigh. There has to be a way around this.

could be, but its not nice.
I would ask if there is a Bios rest on the mobo, FIRST.

There is away. but you need a little electronics education.
IF you jumper, only for a sec, the first and last pin of the cmos chip it will reset, and drop password.

ALSO, there should be a CMOS reader out there.
We used to use them.
Goto the Bios site and ask... DONt say its a friends or that you bought it from someone. Say you forgot the password, and you are original owner. If you get compicated with them, they WONT do it.

What I've discovered is that the VPR doesn't store the password in CMOS, it stores it in an EEPROM. I'm goin crazy trying to unlock this thing.

Then the board should have a Pin to set, to erase the password incase you forget it.

ECA, it's best not to make assumptions. This laptop, like many, keep the BIOS password extremely secure, so it has no reset. I will carry you on my shoulders singing your praises if you can find it.

24/7 technical support at: 1-800-332-4800

call tech support and say.
You need to get into the bios.
You passworded it long ago and forgot what it was.

I tried that 3 times. The first time they said dismantle it and pull the non-existent CMOS battery. The 2nd time they said to desolder the soldered on battery. The 3rd time they said to send it in.
I wrote garbage data to the CMOS memory to force it to reset. No such luck.
I was able to contact the original owner, and he has no memory of ever even setting a password.,

I have to ask:

What does it say when you try to get into bios?
Have you tried the Word "Password","password"??

Yea, I tried a bunch of stuff such as Phoenix, VPR, CMOS, BIOS, etc.

The guys name, his kids name, his dogs name?

The laptop was owned by a no longer existing business, so short of finding their tech department, I won't ever know the PW.

WELLL....
The company that made it should have a prog to get it... But they WONT release it to anybody. Its a security thing.
Find yourself an REAL electronics person. Tell him the problem and if you can the EEPROM chip type, unless you wish to open the machine so he can see it.
He will be able to tell you if its reset-able and how.
Or find a school in the area that teaches it, and ask the Teacher to look up the chip and how to reset it or READ the chip..

It can be done, unless it is encrypted.
