Hi, has anyone heard about any software incompatibility with the philips DMM program ?
I can't get it to work.
It simply closes after the splashscreen !
How am I suppose to transfer music on my HDD100 without the DMM program ?
I already changed the firmware and the installed DMM 2.0 but there seems to be no improvement.

The DMM software is the most badly written software I've ever seen. Unfortunatly unless Philips release the code, we can't make on for ourselves.

My advise would be to format and install windows. It seemed to help me. Just dont forget to backup ur data.

Many of you having problems running DMM software are likely to have newer and faster CPUs from Pentium and Athlon. These new processors are using Hyperthread processing and hyperthreading will likely be set as the default in your MOB bios. The DMM software was written before the new hyperthreading processors hit the scene. To put another way, Some software will not run properly on these processors because it is looking for one processor and hyperthreading causes it to see more than one. The software is then confused and crashes.

So do this...
Restart your pc and go into your BIOS.
Look for a reference to hyperthreading or hyperthread processing. All MOBs are different so I can't tell you where.
If you find it, switch to OFF. Save setting and reboot. Then try to run DMM software.

Until Phillips updates DMM to run in hyperthreading mode, you will need to switch off to load music to your hdd100/120 and switch back on if you want the speed it affords your pc back.

Give this a shot guys.

That may be the solution, but I didn't find approching near hyperthreading.

I guess the only solution is disassemble the file and to patch it, so it doesn't run the test anymore !

Hmm...
This just might be the reason why the DMM software had crashed and is unusable in both my audio PCs. Both have hyperthreading on and couldn't even get it to finish updating the folder where I store my mp3's til it freezes and crash both machines. I'm not about to go into the BIOS to turn off hyperthreading. I'm using both PC's for multitracking and sound design and I need them on. Philips needs to update the software! Thank God I still have my lowly PIII 400 Mhz Sony Laptop running W98SE which plays nicely with the software. And I have been using it exclusively to transfer mp3s in and out the hdd120.

Unfortunately I can confirm that when Hyper Threading is 'switched on' the Philips DMM software does NOT work. The moment Hyper Threading is 'switched off' it works again (slowly, but at least it works).

I think the only thing we can do is bombard Philips
www.philips.com/support (http://www.philips.com/support)
with e-mails urging them to issue better software for the HDD100/120.
Because, apart from that rediculous software (which doesn't even work properly, see above) it is actually a very nice player.

I have hyper threading and it doesnt work. the moment you disable it, dmm works again.

Another way to make DMM work, regardless of HT, is finding the file "DMM.jar" in the Philips folder, and double-click it, overriding the DMM.exe that fails to call the java machine to run the jar file.

This is the way I start DMM... and it's really faster.

I can't found the DMM.jar in the Philips Folder at my PC

if (DMM version < 1.3) then
location=c:/program files/Philips/DMM/DMM/Bin/DMM.jar

if (DMM version = 1.3) then
location=c:/program files/Philips/DMM/DMM/Bin/Windows/DMM.jar

I have HT and it doesn't work. You have to disable it. We just have to keep bombarding Philips.

This is how I gor rid of the problem with win98se.

Open autoexec.bat (probably located in c:) with notepad. There you'll find something like:

SET PATH=C:\PROGRAM FILES\PHILIPS\Digital Media Manager\DMM\BIN\WINDOWS;C:\PROGRAM FILES\PHILIPS\Digital Media Manager\JAVA\BIN;C:\Program files\Philips\Digital Media Manager\java\bin;
SET CLASSPATH=C:\PROGRAM\PHILIPS\Digital Media Manager\JAVA\LIB\RT.JAR;C:\PROGRAM FILES\PHILIPSDigital Media Manager\DMM\BIN\DMM.JAR;C:\Program files\Philips\Digital Media Manager\java\lib\rt.jar;

What you have to do, is to replace som of the "Digital Media Manager" with just "DIGITA~1". It will the look like:

SET PATH=C:\PROGRAM FILES\PHILIPS\DIGITA~1\DMM\BIN\WINDOWS;C:\PROGRAM FILES\PHILIPS\DIGITA~1\JAVA\BIN;C:\Program files\Philips\DIGITA~1\java\bin;
SET CLASSPATH=C:\PROGRAM FILES\PHILIPS\DIGITA~1\JAVA\LIB\RT.JAR;C:\PROGRAM FILES\PHILIPS\DIGITA~1\DMM\BIN\DMM.JAR;C:\Program files\Philips\Digital Media Manager\java\lib\rt.jar;

Good luck!

Alex

I know this may seem obvious, but DMM will not start if you have it pinned to the start menu or as a shortcut....that might be your problem.

Hi guys,

i will tell you my solution for this matter. I checked my system, and found out, that my Visual Basic Runtime is damaged.

This Visual Basic Runtime is installed with your Windows, and it is needed, if you want to start programms, which were coded in Visual Basic.

Well, i searched the whole Internet, and found this file:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa

After I had installed this File, i reinstalled Philips DMM (2.0) and Voalaaaa, it worked.

Perhabs the following file is important, too:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ef463b3a-ef97-454d-839e-7668c1113022&languageid=f49e8428-7071-4979-8a67-3cffcb0c2524&displaylang=en

But well, it works and I am happy.

My System: Windows Xp Professional Service Pack 1
Athlon XP 3000+
ASUS A7N8X-X

Philips HDD100 (15 GB)
Philips Digital Media Manager 2.0

I hope, it was a usefull help for some people out there, who have the same annoying Error, which i had until today :)

Greetz, and enyoy this wonderful mp3-player (if the software works ;) )
