Hey all,

First Time poster/builder here. I was wondering, besides the price, what's the big differance between the Radeon 9800XT and the 9800 Pro? I can't really find any clear descriptions whaere somthing is differant. Anyone know?

The XT is just a tab bit faster and has twice the memory (which means it can handle larger textures). I would go with a cheap 9800PRO and upgrade to the next generation video card when that comes out.

Is price a factor if you are considering these two cards?

Eh, if you can afford it, go for the XT. If you have better things to spend your money on, get the Pro. There is a slight, but noticable difference. I have the 9800 AIW Pro (essentially the 9800 Pro) in one comp and the 9800XT ith the other. When playing with things like the Doom3 beta, you can see a difference, but even with UT2k3 at all high detail and at 1280x760, there's no lag on the Pro.

There was just an article out on the next gen cards, which I can't find now, the next chips iare more meant to intro new features and start the migration to PCI Express. They're faster, but probably won't be worth it for the first gen. Current high end will probably drop, but I don't think as much as in the past. Everyone's taking notes on the whole Athlon FX thing, trying to up the price of the top end to create the air of exclusivity. People recommended that I wait for the next gen, right around the corner, when I built my systems. One was in November, the other January. 6 Months of gaming bliss and counting....

So either get a $50 placeholder for the future, or one of the above.

Int he latest Maximum PC they said Nvidia's NV40 next gen card is stated to come out in June (in AGP form). Keep in mind that Nvidia has missed the past two product launch dates by several months, so look for it close to fall. ATI will probably be introducing a new card around that time too.

I am positive that is a mock-up and no way will it be like that on the production model, doesn't make sense from a business point.
