I'm looking for a new digital camera to replace my aging Casio one.

Price-range: $500-$650
Resolution: 3MP or higher
Zoom lens: 3X or better
Battery type: NIMH AA preferred.
Storage media: CF and IBM Microdrive capable

I have narrowed my choice down to the Fuji S602, Canon S40 (or possibly G2), and Nikon 995

If anyone has used any of these cameras, or have specific recommendations based on the above criteria, please post replies here.

TIA
Ruri.

PS: Sony needs not apply cause I hate memory sticks.

This may be a little late but I love my canon s110. It's tiny, the resolution wasn't there when i bought it, but it's so nice. I wanted something small enough that it'll fit in my jeans pocket without any problems. I take this thing everywhere and take pictures of damn near everything. My friends used to be annoyed but now they just expect it and I find them asking for pictures of lots of things. Document your life man

If you want the look and feel of a manual camera but still have the flexibility that digital offers, than this camera is for you.
The Lecia Digilux might be a bit out of your price range, selling for $799 on Amazon, but for what is behind that price it is worth it.

Here is a good review of the S40. I think that is probably the better of the three cameras that you have listed.

If you are looking for a more compact 4 MP the Olympus D-40 might be for you. They make good cameras and the specs seem to be what you are looking for. Read more about this camera here.

One problem that I think I had with the S 40/30 is that it was larger than the S 20 or the S110. My choice on compact, digital camera that you can carry around with you has been up until this point, the S 20. Even though it has been discontinued and you would probably have to buy it used from someone, I still think its a great camera.

Dang and I bought the Canon S30 and used it at Comdex. It has a very rugged/solid feel to it, while at the same time being very compact in size.

We have been very impressed with this camera so far. Dang can probably explain more to you.

I wonder if ruri has decided on a camera yet?

We use the Canon S30 here at work and I love it. A bit pricy however. I just bought the Kodak CX4330 for home and it's perfect for the intermediate user. Plus, I actually like the software the comes with it. Still need a photo editor ( I reccomend GIMP) but for Red eye and emailing to friends, works like a charm.

Canon S30 is awesome, but you can now find the S40 (the 4 megapixel version) on sale at a lot of places (including CostCo) for only $50 more..thats a steal. That means S40 is $500 on sale, S30 is $450.

Maybe since the S30 has been out longer than you might be able to find a better deal on them. Certainly check online at the various Meta Price Search sites before you go out to a brick and mortar to get an idea. It is always helpful to try it out in the store, hands on, also before you buy it online. It might save you the hassle of returning stuff through the mail if you find out before hand that something about the device bugs you.

Hey!

If you're still looking for a digital camera, I highly recommend the Canon S230. It's a great, small 3MP camera! ;)

I love the S200 that my friend has but since this one has 3MP, it should be even better!

Do you have some links of pictures to post? Yes, I am too lazy to search the web hehe.

Thanks!

I forget what the difference was between the S200 and the S20. I think the S20 takes CF and Microdrives and the other one just takes CF. I want a 5 gig Microdrive to store pictures on !! That is why I like the S20 better from the older Canon models.

I've worked at Kodak for 25 years. We make film and AgX products. We don't make cameras.
I bought a Canon G2 and I love it. I'll dig around and see if I can give you a link.

So who makes the Kodak digital camera's then? I would be interested to know who the OEM is. Kodak digital cameras have received good ratings in the past.

Are you just messin?

Kodak has the manufacuring facilities to make their own chips. They are the OEM. In the past they have used camera bodies and stuck chips that they designed into them. I.E. ~ Canon 620 and the Nikon 520.

I might have those model numbers switched around.

Maybe Kat can help us out with some more information about how Kodak is organized into the different departments. Don't leave out C&GS they super secret asswhole's of Kodak.
