I just got back from New York. I went to the Streaming Media East conference, which this year was combined with Internet World at the Javitz Convention Center.

The number of attendees and booth was a pretty depressing sign of the times. The rows in the conference are numbered by 100s (I.E. 100, 200, 300, etc) This year, instead of filling 3 conference halls with tens of thousands of attendees a day and lots of booths, there was only 11k registered attendees (from what I heard the Thursday before the conference.) All the booths for the combined conference didnt even fill up one conference hall, and the rows only numbered up to 800. It was pathetic, although it made it a pretty easy job for me working the RealNetworks booth.

If anyone went, let me know how it was for you.

Well, since there werent that many companies there, there wasn't much swag to get. I did get a yahoo rocket thingy which is the only cool thing I got.

AOL was giving away shirts if you listened to a presentation, but i wouldn't be caught dead in an AOL shirt.

There was other stuff, but not worth grabbing. At our booth we were giving away free cd's that had realone player, helix producer and helix server on it.

Helix server is the latest version of RealServer. It's used to stream media. It can stream any major media type (windows media, real media, mpeg4, quicktime, mp3, etc). It's now named Helix Server because its source is going to be released soon as part of the Helix Community.

Helix Producer is the application used to encode into Real media. You can encode clips into RealVideo 9, have stereo sound, etc. It can convert files like quicktime, avi, mpeg, etc into RealVideo.

It too is the latest version of what used to be called Real Producer, but Helix producer is a new version and is also part of the Helix Community, who's source will be released as well.
