Is this a retail copy of Windows XP? If it is, then most likely your time to register the product has expired. It could also be that the system is trying to connect to the net in order to register. Have you tried calling Microsoft with your OS key by chance?

How did everything turn out?

Microsoft XP (both Home and Professional) requires you to "Activate Windows" within 15 consecutive days. If you have not done this or was not able to get an internet connection up, Windows will not allow you to start up, and it will proceed to give you an error message. Try re-installing it; if you have nothing important on your computer or have already saved to disk, reformat the hard drive and install XP again. (Install Windows 98 first and then XP if you bought the update version). If that does not work ,contact Microsoft. Although you may be sent on a little trip, when you finally get there, they are very good at helping you out.

(Might I add that if you downloaded XP from KaZaA or some other software applicable downloadable programs, that this can cause serious damage to your registry key, I DO NOT reccommend that you download Operating Systems illegaly...anything else is fine by me ^_-)
