I see people registering in the forums but I don't see them posting. Why would you register and not post? Makes no sense to me. Maybe there is something wrong?

Still seems weird that for every 4 people that register only one posts in the forums. Why register if you are not going to say anything?

Well some do just not all of them. I would say that for every 4 people that register, 1 actually posts on something. Kind of weird if ya ask me.

Hm...sounds like a conspiracy man..maybe they all work at Burgerking and ask us "Would you like an apple pie with that?" Hahaha...(ok..refer to this thread (http://forums.designtechnica.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=475) )

LOL that is super funny when he says that. He sound slike Homer Simpson.

On a side note, what makes forums attractive? There are certainly a lot of people that come to the site and the forums, but not a whole lot that post. Are the forum topics to generic? Maybe they should be broken down more?

Here are my thoughts to the 25% posting problem.

1. Multiple users have different names that they post with.

2. They see something interesting, subscribe and then find out that this is not the forum for them.

3. We are too technical of a site for some surfers who are looking for a place to post about anything in general.

4. They feel overwhelmed with our vast knowledge and thus feel that they can not contribute to the conversation.

5. They just want to read or they don't visit the site very often.

6. We may be not the right size site for them. In other words, we have too small or too large of a user base. It is doubtful that we have too small of a user base because anything smaller would be a personal site with little traffic.

--

I think the key for return visitors is to keep them coming back. While we may catch their interest with an article or two it is difficult to get regulars because there is alot of competition for other sites. A regular contributor who has valueable information to share is a rare commodity. Everyone will give what they can based on their situation. There are many variables that will determine how often a person visits the site and the quality of information that they have to offer. Now my question to you is; Do we want a larger community with alot of useless information ( / . or K5 ) or do we want a site that is very valueable to the people who do visit regularly?

I've talked to a couple of my friends and coworkers about "how and why they start posting in certain forums" and from what I've gathered, all of them start participating in forums when they see a thread/topic that sparks their interest, and isn't too technical or in too deep.

The way that all of them have started posting in certain forums was...they saw a poll or thread whose topics were based off of
the goals of the websites (i.e. consumer electronics and personal computing)...but were more generalized and not to technical about that topic.

Some topics of polls/threads that they recalled were (not exact as originals)
- What gadgets do you carry?
- Most used peripheral
-Thoughts about...(fill that in)
- Do you use a digicam, webcam, etc

Thats just some of the stuff we talked about.
It seems that users appeal to this stuff and more sociable threadsfirst and then slowly work into the threads that hold the meat of the sites goal

I'm not sure if this helps or made any sense, but it's something :)

most folks could be like me, who usually just read and generally have nothing of note worth adding to any conversation. Dunno...I'm a lurker by trade, what can I say. I just like having an account if by chance I want to post. There is a good number of people registered here, but its usually (?) the same cast that is active...

So yeah, that didn't really add anything to the thread, guess thats why I mostly lurk

Well, don't be a stranger. You seem like a smart and cool guy to talk with.

I think that a lot of people lurk, they just need something that would catch their attention!:D

When I went to Paris last year, I met a friend of my cousins who's a dev working on encryption stuff. They dont get paid that well I think, but damn their works hours ROCK!!!

Its like 35 hours a week, with something like 1.5 months off a year.

I heard about this too. The reason from what I understand is that there are so moany people looking for work over there, they have to limit everyones hours to make sure more people work. Thats the case in England from what I hear.

Otherwise, sign me up. I could use a month and a half off any day!:D

They dont get paid that well I think

Hmmm . I do have an awful lot of school loans . That might be a bad idea if I am paid in Lira. Then again, I think Italy joined the EU. Well I might be able to find something!! Who knows.
