View Full Version : why can't I permantently delete contacts in Trillian?

Every time I delete a contact, the next session where I load Trillian up the contact shows up again under merged contacts?

What is the deal with this?

Also, do I need to actually have AIM or ICQ installed on my computer in order for Trillian to pick up the contacts or to use my ICQ registration info?

In other words, do I need Trillian, ICQ and AIM all on my computer or can I just keep Trillian!?

i dunno about that whole delete thing, but you don't need the icq/aol stuff installed for trillian to work. at least you shouldn't. i think it just needs your login stuff so it can access the info like it normally would from any computer. :censored <--- i just threw that in cause it's funny ;)

The one thing I'm sure of here. Is that you DONT need the independant AIM or ICQ progs installed for trillian to work, just your login/registration info.

My hypothesis on why you cant get rid of contacts is this:

AIM stores contact info for each client on its own servers, so when a fresh install of software happens, contact info is automatically retrieved from a remote location and changes (like deleting or modifying) happen remotely. Pretty nifty and convienient. huh?

Unless... of course. Your using 3'rd party software to communicate with AIM servers (something AOL hates). In which case some sort of comminication bug between trillian and AIM servers isnt allowing contact info to be deleted off the AIM server, but only in trillian registry. So every time you delete a contact, logoff, and then log back on. The AIM servers re-send that contact info (that was never deleted from them), and trillian detects it as new, and puts it into "merged contacts" list (cus it came from another contact list offa AIM servs).

Thats just my theory at least :P

Well, here is the weird thing. I actually went online and downloaded AIM, then tried to delete the contacts through AIM itself. They deleted, but once I started up AIM again they were there under merged contacts again on both AIM and Trillian. So I am lost here. But its very very annoying.

Well if its doin it with 2 different apps. Then I can only come to 2 conclusions :P

A) AOL database servs arent updating your nfo when you delete the contacts.

B) You've got a registry entry (probably an AOL one) linking both progs to an old contact list still somewhere on your comp.

-So either find and delete the old list, or find and delete any AOL registry entries and have the prog create a new one.

I'm thinking its more likely to be you than them... but thats just a hunch.

I think your hypothesis on B is probably the case. I will be formatting my system tonight, I hope it fixes this!

so i didn't really read the whole thread, so I hope I got it all. Trillian cant permanently delete contacts on your list because trillian doesn't have the ?permissions? to delete the names from the AOL server that stores your buddy list; this is why you have the same list no matter which computer you log on from. I always had to get on regular IM to update my buddy lists for trillian. But maybe things have changed since i last used trillian

So even after the format, the merged contacts from AIM are still showing up on Trillian. I even installed AIM seperately and tried to delete them that way, but to no avail.

*sigh, looks like I am doomed! :(

Dang, I suppose I should just keep em. Something must be weird with my account.

yeah...and maybe just put'em at the end of the list or something. That's really weird.
So when you go to delete a contact, you restart trillian, and then the contacts are under merged?
How do YOU go about deleting the contacts?

Hey you Trillian Pro users, can you look into this idea i had for the site.

http://forums.designtechnica.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=589&highlight=Trillian

-------------

IronSerif - You can always ignore / invisible the people. So that you never hear from them again. It seems like you have gone through alot of trouble to do something similar. If it is not working why not try and follow what the others have suggested and delete them using the actual client.

might be a stupid question, but I'll still be able to get into the IRC room with the regular Trillian, yes?

edit: this is in regards to vin's last post:cool:

Yes I think it was just my connection. Earthlink blocks all sorts of stuff.

You could have responded to this in the other thread . :)

Ahh maybe it is just Ioman then I thought you were having problems also. Could it be because he is using the free/basic version?

If you just look it up on the internet, this is a common problem and it can be solved by using Aim.com's Quick Buddy. Or the mac version of AIM. Delete the contacts in the Quick Buddy and they won't show back up.

And I run the paid version of Trillian. It still does the same thing. Which, the deletion thing happens on my version of AIM. It's just the fact that some computers aren't letting the commands go through to the AIM server.
