I bought a HDD100 and have charged it until the little plug appears, started playing tunes and within 30 mins the battery meter reads 50%?
Is my battery goosed or is it a crap meter?

it wasnt fully charged....The battery meter only has what 3 or 4 bars...it may have gotten just past the 4th bar, so it wasnt really fully charged.
First charge on most items takes at least 10 hours and upto 16.
Then make sure its drained down before recharge.

HDD100 Battery = "Built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery"
Expect this to last 1.5 - 3 years and then you are going to notice that it lasts much shorter amount of time. Just like cell phone batteries this battery is going to need to be replaced.

Simple Guidelines
* Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.)
Short battery life in a laptop is mainly caused by heat rather than charge/discharge patterns.
* Although memory-free, apply a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges to calibrate batteries with fuel gauge. Running down the battery in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate. The battery life will not be affected.
* Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.
* Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. (Some laptop manufacturers are concerned about dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing.)
* Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing date. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.

Li-ion batteries are not as durable as NiMH and NiCd designs, although they do not suffer from the memory effect. At a typical 100% charge level (notebook battery, full most of the time) at 25 degrees Celsius, Li-ion batteries irreversibly lose approximately 20% capacity per year from the time they are manufactured, even when unused. (6% at 0 degrees, 20% at 25 degrees, 35% at 40 degrees Celsius. When stored at 40% charge level, these figures are reduced to 2%, 4%, 15% at 0, 25 and 40 degrees Celsius respectively.) Every (deep) discharge cycle decreases their capacity. The degradation is sloped such that 100 cycles leave the battery with about 75% to 85% of the original. When used in notebook computers or cellular phones, this rate of deterioration means that after two to three years the battery will have capacities too low to be still usable.

I changed the title btw.
TG,
good catch, been looking for that info ALONG time...
It does mention the DISCHARGE... Also that if stored at 0 degrees C, 32 F, it should last longer...
But how you get past the HEAT issue in a LAPTOP...
When batteries are USED at there optimum, they will Warm up, and as you posted.. 25-40 C isnt that hot...
