"Therefore, the market is likely to be divided between discount products and lifestyle products. Dell isn’t very well positioned for any of these two segments. Neither is HP.
For the discount segment, Dell does have the “money-smart” image. However, since supermarkets and mass electronics market will take over as the major distribution channels, Dell won’t be in a position to offer the deep-discount prices that can compete with the deep discounters. "
I have been saying this for a long time. What the article is failing to point out however is that Dell and HP are the ones currently making a profit in the current market. Apple from what I can tell is still barely breaking even with their computer products and Sony's only profitable division was their Playstation group.
In the future, maybe companies that develop lifestyle products will be rewarded by the market - if they are still around by then.
IMO Gateway has been selling some pretty cool lifestyle products, but because they are selling at a some what premium price, they are struggling financially, which is a major bummer.
I would not buy Dell if my life depended on it. They are manufacturing computers so cheaply right now that they are putting companies out of business. I will always reward innovation by paying more.
