I am in the process of downloading it now from Microsofts website. How does everyone like the update so far? I will post my feedback once its installed.

I like it... only thing I've really noticed is the popup blocker, and some of the new security stuff for OE. It kinda made my system screwy, but its been over a year since my last format, so I already slipstreamed SP2 and am gonna whipe my hdd once my new processor n stuff comes!

It seems to slow down my windows bootup considerably...the popup blocker and firewall are nice additions, but I still doubt I'll use IE cuz it's so mainstream that there's no way somebody won't find a way through it.

In the security settings it won't recognize Norton 2003 on my system, it just says "status unknown"

I noticed that IE runs a lot faster since the upgrade. The popup-blocker is pretty nice. I hope Microsoft realizes that they will be hurting the ad industry prettybadly by installing a popup blocker in their web browser.

My security settings do not recognize Norton either. I think Microsoft did this deliberately and it will most likely hurt Norton's business too.

I turned off the Firewall because my router has a pretty good firewall built in. I also turned off the MS security settings since I prefer Norton.

Overall I don't think it has hurt my system so far. I love the faster IE browser though, pages load noticeably faster for me.

Ioman a hardware firewall on a router is much different than a software firewall on your computer. You really should have both. The software firewall allows you to prevent unauthorized programs from accessing the internet. Programs like Zone Alarm also notice when a program has changed, alerting you to that fact since some viruses could change the properties of a program you had allowed to access the internet. Your router firewall only hides your computer on the internet.

About SP2 - I like how it handles wireless better. It seems to connect to my 802.11g network easier/quicker and I don't get any drops. However, ever since I installed SP2 on my laptop it has made browsing my network shares very slow. It will often take 3 or 4 minutes for my network places to come up. I haven't installed it on my desktop yet.

I realize they are both different. I have tried McAfee, Norton, Blackice, ZoneAlarm and they are all more trouble than they are worth. Zone Alarm is the biggest pain in the arse, I am surprised anyone uses it.

My systems (6 systems in the house) run just fine without a software firewall. I keep my security settings turned up high in my browser, and have Norton Protect running in the background in addition to my router firewall, and hardly ever have any issues.

Hey how do I turn off the reminders that the security center keeps giving me? It keeps bugging me to turn on the firewall and the auto-update. Its a pain in the butt and super annoying.

Go into the Security Center, under firewall click advanced and choose to monitor the firewall yourself. Or disable the security service all together.

I have done everything I can short of disabling it all together and I am still getting the reminders. Any other way to turn off the reminders?

I rule of thumb for SP updates is wait one month, then install. Otherwise I install em right away, so I'm no help here!

Upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 2 will cause problems with about one in every 10 PCs running the operating system, according to research published Tuesday by a Canadian asset-monitoring service provider.

AssetMetrix probed more than 44,000 Windows XP systems housed in nearly 350 companies to come up with its numbers, matching what it found on the PCs against various lists that Microsoft has posted of programs that have, or may have, compatibility issues with the massive update.

"On average, 10.3% of the Windows XP-based machines will have an issue of some degree with SP2," said Steve O'Halloran, managing director of AssetMetrix Research Labs. "Or better put, they have the 'opportunity' for an issue to arise."

The Ottawa company used Microsoft-made lists--including one that identifies applications that have an issue with the now-on-by-default Windows Firewall, and another that names apps known to experience a "loss of functionality" when Service Pack 2 is installed--to come up with its figures.

Has anyone had any issues with SP2 causing an application to no longer run correctly?

Not me. I have it on my main office desktop (which has a ton of apps installed) and everything runs the same as before.

OH NOOOO.. I've been told absolutely not to download Service Pack 2. It will screw up your machine..The guy that just worked on my PC told me that since people have installed SP2 he's found it's done everything from slowing machines down to clashing with video cards and screwing things up there. I'm not going to to install it.. I don't know though, maybe it's good.

its only about 1%, and THOSE (I HAVE NOTICED) are Dell, HP, Compac...
BUT, it DOES want DirectX9+ and Media player 10, WHICH are NOT REMOVEABLE.
And Running DirectX (DXDiag.exe) after ANY major updates I recommend, as it configs your video and audio, with ANY new changes.(supposed to anyway)

If you have a lot of really old programs installed, I would pass installing it. I have installed it on 3 computers so far and have not had a problem at all. In fact it has sped them up in a lot of areas such as web browsing.

Last Night I turned off the Computer and it did not turn off. I had the blue logoff screen which read "Downloading 1 of 3 updates Dont turn off computer it will turn off automatically"

Well I lay in bed waiting for a few minutes. I look across the room and still the blue screen, I try to go to sleep and after an hour I'm still awake waiting for the computer to turn off. So I got up and turned off the monitor. I could still hear the computer going still wondering when it will turn off. Finally I fell asleep and when I woke up this morning I turned the monitor back on and I got the same Message.

I unplugged the Computer then rebooted. Then I turned off Automatic Updates. Has anyone else have this problem?..........Jim :crazy

NEVER,
I turned mine off (win2000) YEARS AGO....
I hate my comp doing stuff I DONT want, or in the background.

When I had win98 and 56k, it would just popup and GO, and take all my DL speed to nothing...Try that in the middle of a NET game... Talk about CRASH.

also noticed changes in software they released, and hated NEW stuff, as the older software was better.

I never use auto updates for any software I have installed, not even my anti-virus software. I think thats pretty cool that SP2 will do that though - when it works!

You must have an older machine, or a motherboard that has trouble with software controlled on/off's?

My father installed Serivce Pack 2 and is getting blue screen of Death every time that he reboots. If you do a hard reboot after the blue screen windows will load fine, but he is having to reboot 2x everytime he wants to use the computer.

Here I complied a list of what is on this computer using Belarc Advisor and removed the private stuff.

See attached txt file.

I am thinking that it is either McAfee Firewall not playing nice or a problem with the drivers of the printer/scanner or another program causing problems with service pack 2... Check out the txt file.

1. check to see if you have Hardware updates to Video and audio cards...Sence its DELL, good luck. Windows update probably INSTALLED its OWN dea of it, and SCREWED your comp.
Go SAFE mode, and change the drivers... Its a pain, but should work... ALSO, make sure your comp is DX9.0c compatible.
to many patches at 1 time... You MIGHT be able to update direct from Windows update, SLOWLY, insted of 1 BIG PATCH group.

(whatever that means)
Driver Revision: 6.14.10.3943

BUT, you have to USE DELL drivers...esp if the INTELL Video chipset is ON the mobo...
DELL customized it, and the way its accessed.

ASUS dont make video cards, but they sell them with there OWN programming... Installing the ATI or NVidia drivers DONT work... Have to use ASUS drivers.

llbbl
12-19-2004, 03:42 PM
no that is crap cause Dell isn't going to rewrite the chipset video card drivers. They might offer a place on their servers to download a copy of the same software that Intel releases. They might redirect you to the intel site to download what I have found.

The are a reseller ... They find the parts and put it together .. They might write an app to search for updated drivers or some crap like that but believe me they aren't going to code drivers for all their hardware they have.

Well it seems to be working now. I am not totally sure that the video card update fixed it. I have rebooted it 5 times without problems.

BUT:
Ms sees that your system HAS the intell card, and They want to install it, And it ends up in your UPDATES... It aint the right one...
Hmmm,
HOw do I know this... MS update wanted to give me an updated driver for my machine... IT DIDNT WORK.. It wasnt the correct one.
ASK DELL before updateing drivers, SENCE its DELL.
You KNOW better then to THINK MS has the answer, or even the proper driver.

You KNOW better then to THINK MS has the answer, or even the proper driver...

I am aware of this. I would never do such a thing.

ASK DELL before updateing drivers, SENCE its DELL.

Why should I waste my time waiting to talk to someone who is going to do what I just did and find the video card driver on Intel's site that corresponds to my chipset.

I only talk to customer service for the two following reasons:

1) Can't think of anythign else to try
2) Hardware is broke and its under warrenty

Not everyone is me thou . Don't give me recommendations meant for other people. When making recommendations to a geek just say try doing <this> and assume we know how to do it unless we say otherwise, don't say you should call customer service so they can hold your hand through the process. That is insulting.

Good idea about trying to update the video card drivers. It hasn't done the blue screen once. I think that fixed it. I was ready to uninstall service pack 2.
