So I've done everything I can, and still cannot get this computer online! Anyone have any more suggestions?

I've been on the phone with Comcast, all the settings and everything is fine. Finally ended up un-installing the ethernet card and un-plugging the drive. Plugged it into a different port, even. Windows ME does not need me to load a driver, it always loads it automatically, like plug-n-play. Removed the tcp/ip, restarted, added tcp/ip back, restarted. But it still won't connect. I run winipcfg and release-all and renew-all, still nothing.

We're currently:
accton EN1207D series pci fast ethernet adapter
IP Address: 192.168.1.103 -comcast said this is correct
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server:192.168.1.1
DNS1: 204.127.198.19
DNS2: 63.240.76.19

In a command prompt, I can ping IP addresses and get replies back just fine. But not regular name hosts.
ping yahoo.com = unknown host
ping 216.109.118.68 = reply from...

So it looks like a DNS error, but Comcast Tech Support says they've done what they can, and it's probably a problem somewhere in the registry, and they won't help me with that.

SO! Anyone know...
1) how to reset DNS on cable internet, or if thats the correct DNS numbers
2) if it's even a DNS problem..
or 3) what the hell is wrong with this thing...

I have an AOL CD (who doesn't?) But I don't understand what re-loading IE will do.

Especially since I've already reinstalled the ethernet card and driver. And reset the DNS. And no other browser will bring up a page either, like Netscape, and IM programs won't connect, and the command prompt won't ping name hosts.

But I'll give it a try.
...
OK I tried it and it didnt work. And now I have an aol infested IE. Comcast said it looked like a problem in the registry?

If it didnt work, then there is an infestation.
you have a BOT, or virus that is stopping the loading.

Only thing you can do.
Run spybot, spyblaster, adaware, and post a Hijackthis HERE from the infected comp.

we can see wht can be done... but it AINT GOOD.

Maybe I should explain more. This all started when I tried to hook up a router in my room. 3 computers, 1 ethernet outlet for comcast cable. The ME computer was set up to be the main computer on the network, and I had to go through a bunch of wizards and changing configurations to get them all working. Lo and behold, comcast set up their own router to go to each room in the house, and my router won't get any of the computers online in here. So we returned the router, and I'm trying to get the computer just back online regularly. Both other computers are working fine, both are laptops with XP. But the desktop with ME won't work now.

I've run all the anti-virus programs and adaware and syware programs on it that I can. I don't think this is the problem. I think something got messed up in how the computer connects to the internet. It really looks like a DNS problem, but I've reset the DNS and still nothing. Comcast says it looks like something is messed up in the Registry. Any other suggestions?

Question, do you still have a 56k type modem installed..... If SO, REMOVE IT....

OK,

You need to UNINSTALL all of windows network.
Take your Hardware network OUT...
Take Windows Networking OUT.. do remember/write down, all configurations FIRST.
Then startup windows.

I NOW ask that you have your Windows disks, and Network cards.. YOU WILL NEED THEM.

OK, Install the Hardware, and drivers...This all should have been removed from before.

Windows will WANT to install the network drivers for itself.. And should REconfig itself.

Warning:
This has happened to me before.. I find it easyier to RELOAD everything.. There is 1 file that HAD to be removed from the system for myself, as windows DONT kill it when you remove the hardware or the network config.

Im looking for MS solution.

I am currently having the exact same problem. My situation is this: One computer, running WinME, online with Comcast Cable Internet, working like exactly as it should. MY computer, running WinME, with all the same settings, not working at all. I tried running the discs that came with the cable modem, and the Comcast Cable Installation disk, but was told by Comcast support that it should be as easy as pulling the ethernet cord out of the back of machine No. 1 and plugging it in the back of Machine No. 2. Not so.
After a half-hour on the phone with Comcast support, changing various settings and plugging and unplugging everything involved, they told me to go to support.microsoft.com. As you most likely know, they are useless. Any ideas?

Do you have a Phone modem ALSO installed?
IF so, disconnect it, Turn it off in BIOS if its onboard.
PULL the network card, then Start windows and REMOVE all networking.

THEN insert the net card, install drivers, LOAD up Comcast or call them to connect.

MAY have to REINSTALL IE.. but thats somewhat easy.

Well, after pulling the phone modem and the NIC, removing all the networking, and reinstalling the NIC and IE, I'm still sittin on a netless computer. :( (toyed with all the same settings, made sure they were all as they should be... still no go)
any other ideas?

NOW,
Its Starting IE, correct, but NOT getting anyplace...
4 numbers
1-255, 1-255, 1-255, 1-255...= 50,25,16,1
Insert that into the address line. Try afew.. IF you get ANYTHING, its the DNS=Dynamic naming system...

GRAB one of those CD's you get in the mail... EXPLORE it... DONT auto start.. Look around the disk...IE is on there someplace... INSTALL it.. It will be abit weird, but will give you a starting point to fix.

OK, I tried at least 50 different combinations of numbers (50.16.47.201, etc), but no go on any and all.
I threw away all those AOL/Earthlink/etc CDs when i moved last week. There's an IE installer on my HD, though. good enough?
One difference I noticed between this computer and MY computer, in the IP config, after clicking More Info, there's a "IP Routing Enabled", with a check by it. (not something that can be checked/unchecked) My computer doesn't have the check. is this something that needs to be changed? CAN it be changed? (I ahvent figured out how if it can)

Will check back tomorrow. Must sleep...
