Hi, hope someone has an answer !
I have a 1ghz advent pc with 128mg memory. I have installed XP home on it and have a toshiba dvd rom and a Liteon 16x10x40 cd/rw.
whenever I load a dvd or cd doesnt matter which, and click on the drive in windows explorer I get the message
incorrect function.
I have checked drivers etc and everything seems ok.

Sounds like you either need new drivers for your CD/DVD rom drives, or Windows XP needs to be reinstalled. I doubt both drives are bad, so you probably had some .dlls deleted by accident or something.

That, and HOw big is your hard drive??
Cut your screen resolution to 640x480...
XP wants 200+MEGS, JUST for windows, and if you have 8-16meg video you are cacheing also....
Windows either RAN out of RAM(hard drive space) or dropped what it THOUGHT it didnt need.

Thanks for your replies, only problem is windows xp home and getting another validation if I reload.
The hard drive is a 10 gb and has about 5 gbs free.
It may be drivers or dlls, have another go.

My ASSUMPTION,
Is that you havent enough RAM to RUn XP... You have, NOT CACHE left...

Windows is FUNNY...
When it runs out of RAM, it uses the HD. when it NEEDS 1 meg, it GRADS 10 from the HD...
Windows XP needs 200 MEGS, JUST FOR XP... It WANTS another 80+megs which equals 800+ megs off your HD...
Video is WORSE, it wants 20 Megs(some one told me) PER 1 meg needed.
640x400x16bit DISPLAY...4,096,000, without ANYTHING open or running.
RUN ANYTHING and that prog, or window is taking MORE RAM...

Do something...
DEFRAG your HD... At 10gig, it should only take about 20 minutes MAX...
But I BET, it will be a couple HOURS for it..

Hi, thanks for the info, I am in the process of defragging at the moment. Strange however, I decided to try Nero burning software that is installed to see if it recognised the drives. It did, I was able to copy a disc from one drive to the other ! When I put in a cd, the drive starts up for a second then stops. The nero program said that I had both drives on the same ide bus, but I am sure they are on different ide connectors.
Ready to pull hair now !!!

I WOULD check that...
ALSO, they should NOT be MASTER...

AND, NERO is KNOWN for being a PAIN on some systems...

Hi
just to say thanks for your help. Tried most things and eventually resorted to reloading XP home and all works now ! Only problem being getting a new activation from Microsoft.

Cheers
