I've heard several times of the possibility to burn DVD R's with a CDR/RW DVD combo drive. Any truth in this or is it just myth?

NO. It wont do it.
It can REAd the DVD but not BURN to DVD.
B"UT, you can READ DVD and,
if it small enough,
change it format, SVCD, MP2, ....
ReWrite it to CD...

Many DVD's are NOT that large, esp Cartoons.

AND if you are REALLY into it, you can break it up into Mutiple CD's with the right programs.
considering the cost of DVD media is dropping, that is almost a waste tho. And a GREAT DVD writer is less then $200 and READS/writes CD also.(Plextor)

DVD Burners are so cheap now. You can get a OEM one for under $75 US. I got my toshiba for $78 at a local store with a black face (extra $$ for that black face plate!)
