I've got two desktops lying around- a Compaq Presario 5000 w/ a Pentium III 1 Ghz, 384 mb ram (don't ask), and a 40 gig HD.
The other one's a Dell Dimension 2400 w/ 2.4 Ghz celeron, 256 mb ram, and a 40 gig HD.
Can I make either of these decent gaming machines w/o too much money? As in UT2004. Or should I just buy/build a new machine altogether?
The 2.4Ghz, proc wise would be a better option then the PIII, even though it's a celeron. How much money do you have to spend if you built a new machine? Does your dell have a AGP slot for an upgrade graphics card?
Both machines need more memory and would need more memory. The Compaq is too slow unless you put it on low graphics. With the dell you might be able to upgrade the processor to a better one (non-celeron) too.

I'm quite sure that the Dell doesn't have an AGP expansion slot- even the next-gen version of it doesn't. But I think I've heard of the Compaq having graphics capabilities, so could I replace its processor, add some ram and a graphics card, and play some games?

buy parts .. You can upgrade RAM, mobo, chip and video card for like 800 or so, depending on video card. If you get a decent video card not top of line you are looking at about 400-500.
