Gaim-Integrated Filesharing

Jail for filesharers is ridiculous. We need to stop it.
The lawsuits aren't enough. The major record labels are literally trying to send people to prison for sharing music, and a new bill in Congress right now would let them. We can't let that happen-- it is a completely, utterly, unacceptable political tactic. We've written a detailed write-up for a simple, new approach to filesharing that could make the major labels' tactics useless. It would let you search, browse, and share files with your friends in your IM program. It would be simple, natural, and completely secure from outside snooping.
The Future of Filesharing
And secure, private filesharing isn't just important for keeping kids out of jail, it's also key to the future of filesharing. The most exciting uses of peer-to-peer technology are still in many ways on the horizon. Content created by individuals, shared by individuals will finally have it's day when the distribution network is perfected. But filesharing, which is the key to making this possible, is being intentionally tainted by the RIAA. Blocking their efforts to destroy the technology is key to taking it to the next level.

There is such a place...
NEWSGROUPS....

USENET sucks... a leftover remnant from the early Internet. It's difficult to search for stuff and the pr0n is mostly spam... ;) ... and it does not have the advantages of P2P distributed bandwidth.

Aww, you like PORN...
YEP, they are spammed so bad its stupid.
But for other rhings, they are great. Its faster then Bit torr, Agent is perfect for its use, and there IS a way for work around the MASS of groups. IF you didnt know.
Also the P2P scources are NOT anonomous. Friend of mine got TAGGED, and lost his Connection until he Filled out form SAYING he did " A BAD THING". He was getting the spiderman comics, and they thought he was getting the Spiderman Movie.
USEnet can be totally anonomous SAFE and secure, IF you know what you are doing.

Sending filesharers to jail is totally draconian in most cases, but in some cases I think it's probably reasonable.

Yea but its legal ECA and the RIAA supports it because it prevents people from downloading a copy of the song unless you purchase it.

Snocap is different than all the others because it uses a distributed method to deliever the files instead of a centralized server.

Plus it sounds like it might let you share songs that haven't been copyrighted .. like DJ mixes or something..... maybe

Good analysis here:

I don't think it will work at this point in time, but something like it will in the coming years.

And don't forget that licensing is further muddied by the international nature of the business. Universal may offer artist A in the US, but Sony is A's label in Europe. To operate as it envisages, Snocap will need deals at all these levels. If it can't get them, it will need to filter out cross-border shares and downloads, which is not an easy process. IP addresses give some indication of geography, but it's by no means a guarantee. For example, all AOL users, wherever they are in the world, appear to reside in the US, as far as their IP addresses go.

Hmm... I wonder how itunes and the others do it now

Then there's the question of who's going to pay for all this. The labels bill Snocap, and Snocap bills the P2P networks. They, in turn, will need to bill the user, either directly or through advertisement revenue. Either way, the punter pays, and again that may well steer folk toward separate P2P services. It's no-cost content that drives P2P usage today, far more than breadth of content.

So would you pay per song or a monthly charge?

If it was garenteed that I could find the songs that I am looking for anytime I want to download it, I would pay for the monthly charge as long as it is reasonable. I think that most perople would be fine paying $10/month or even by package deals (say $1/5 songs) a month. Even if it was a netflicks type of thing where you can only have x ammount of songs that download at a time and queue the rest for later.
