View Full Version : NEW record, does MS really want it?
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/27874.html
Please, someone tell me the OTHER OS's have had this manny problems AFTER, release. Or they have had this manny updates in 1 year. OR that the others have had the SAME problems.... ANY problems. Half as bad as THIS.
:sponge
Lot's of em have pretty nasty bugs. The problem with MS is that they hide it until it becomes a problem, where most other OS's will publish a report and fix ASAP.

What are you are talking about a new record? Maybe you skimmed over this part.
That's about all but before we leave you it'd be remiss of us not to mention Microsoft's 62nd security alert this year - a cumulative patch for its famously buggy Web server software, Internet Information Server, which was also issued yesterday.
How many people actually have IIS installed when Apache is the better Web Server?

And fixing MS, is like REwriting it from the beginning.

This is Number 64 for the year, and it (the year) aint over yet.
"So, you wonder, does this flaw (Microsoft's 64th security alert this year) invalidate its prized Common Criteria certification for Win2K?"

#64 for IIS doesn't mean #64 Win2k because hardly anyone that runs Win2k Actually uses IIS. That is my point. Just cause its part of the OS doesn't mean you have to patch it. No reason to patch a program that isn't running or maybe isn't even installed. I could give less than 2 ****s about #64 patches for IIS because I know Apache is a better web server.

The damn article isn't too clear on what the heck makes up those #62 security alerts ... lets just leave it at that! They could have counted friggin XP, IIS, Win2k, Office 2k, Office XP, .NET ...
Its generally, 64 Internet related errors that can be used against you, trojans, Virus, Entry, from Win98se-XP..
You dont have to BACK-up Windows, and side with them. If we had a REAL choice, I thiink ALOT of us would be USING it.
My main concern, is the IDEA, that you create an OS, that is BASED on IE(because you CANT remove it, makes it a Major part of Windows) has so manny problems with being on the NET, I(ME, not you) would expect that a Person with knowledge of the Internet, and ALL its vulnerabilities, would be CREATEing, and makeing it better. But, I have a funny feeling that a person WithOUT knowledge of the Protocols of the Internet, is MAKING, and modifing, IE. A knowledge of Linux,Unix, and about 3 other environments that are Dedicated to Networking, and the internet, would REALLY help MS. IMHO.

Just because IIS has a security flaw doesn't mean that it is going to affect 9X machines because IIS isn't included on the OS cd as an option if they want to install. Another thing is that XP is a new OS and M$ has always released in the same way. It takes about a year of patches for the OS to be considered stable or until they feel like they should stop fiddling with it and start on a new version. You can expect to see alot of patches for their current OS within that first year as they are busy writing service packs for the holes that are announced and the flaws that are not.
Their OS isn't based on IE. While you can't easily uninstall it you can very easily use another browser. This is a much better solution. Like their other products they seem to make an attempt to fix MOST major holes in the browser. I got fed up this year and have been using only Mozilla.
Vin..
XP has been out almost 2 years, by my thinking.
IE is part of the kernal, It can NOT be removed. It can be added to, and updarted. If you remove it, the OS will fail.
And the Errors are in the OS, those 64 updates, were for Win 98SE-XP..
FYI... lots of people run IIS on their win2k server machines. If MS got them to buy w2k server, then trust me, most likely they are running IIS as well, along with Exchange 2000.
