Today I finally broke down and removed NetBSD 1.6.2 from my laptop in order to install Gentoo 2004.3 which is the same thing that is installed on my dns/proxy servers at work. The reason I am doing this is to enable portable hacking on the scripts. Once everything is done I plan on diffing the system and overlaying my changes on the server. I am going to be using this as a review from a BSD users stand point.

First look into the install system is not to bad. The graphical background is not to bad but I would prefer if it can be turned off or changed to another graphic. On another note since I am building it from stage one it is not to bad. The dmesg on tty2 shows alot more information then any linux distribution that I have yet to install and it makes one wonder if this will continue in the installed system of if dmesg is only this verbose durring the install. The system did not automatically reconize either wireless card but since I am hard wired it doesn't really matter. It does look like I will be leaving the laptop here for the weekend though.

Well to have an almost fully optimized linux system right after the install is a benifit. It shure beets the pants off of modifing a RedHat system which is what they had.

Day three of the install. Don't know when "scripts/bootstrap.sh" finished since I left the laptop at work on friday but it was done today when I got in. The istall is still going strong I am running "emerge system" right now.

Day three of the install.
Day three! **Snicker, chuckle, gasp, cough** Wow. My laptop (VPR 185A5) would melt running gcc for hours on end. I'm stuck with Debian until I buy something a bit less radioactive.

Gentoo is installed and working now. It is nice for an end user that wants more control but I don't see me keeping this install very long. As soon as I can prove to the boos to ditch the linux box and go with OpenBSD for the mail server gentoo is being eradicated. Now comes the fun part, timing how long it takes to crack into the system.

It is official. Gentoo is banned from my network! The bos gave me the ok to install OpenBSD on the servers one at a time as we cycle out the old for new servers.
