Well time has come, prices are right for me to replace my tried and true old dual PPro 200 which has served me well for eons it seems now :D

Decided to build me a new machine, new dually (initially intended for a quad, but decided to save $1100)... Specs as follows, calling the machine "Tiny" (no joke)

Procs: 2x P4 Xeon @ 2.4GHz
Mobo: MSI 860
RAM: 2 GB
Storage: 2x 73GB U320 SCSI (manufacturer probably will be IBM)

Nothing else really special, little ati video for use when needed, no sound, multiple intel lan cards etc etc just the usual little toys :)

Lemme know what ya's think, too much? Not enough? It's job is to handle running high traffic MySQL database server serving up 200 databases, each pulling and storing data multiple times every hour, web server for 2 sites, nothing big, taking over primary control of my two domains email (roughly 20000 messages daily received / sent) and a proprietary inter-office application sharing network I designed and wrote for development (cpu utilization on this is what killed the old ppro's performance all to hell... well that and the 100 new db's) :)

Koo... I'm building a dual AthlonXP (Maybe MP if all does not go well) using the Tyan TigerMPX Mobo with 1GBs of 2100 DDR..
and a 240GB RAID 5 array.. (IDE)...

What case are you going with Sui?

Yo Seng. U said dually Athlon XP's? I was under the impression that u could only dually Athlon MP's...

So is it something u missed or something I did? :P

Athlon MPs are just uber-tested AthlonXPs. Most XPs will work as MPs without any problems.

I knew that there were no differences between the XP and MP's technical specs. I just didnt know whether or not XP's had been "handicapped" so that they wouldnt go dually or not.

But thnx anyway Link ;)

Sui, why IBM scsi instead of Seagate?

I'm pretty wary of IBM drives now since their whole fiasco with their current IDE drives, plus I believe they sold off their hard drive division?

I heard that IBM sold off their har drive division too, but to who though? I remember being told that IBM and Maxtor shared the same manufacturing facilities as well.

I know our hosting company swears by Seagate SCSI drives for their servers.

The case sengir? well, that's not really important as it's gonna be sitting outta the way, nobody'll ever see it until i show it to 'em, so I'm just going to use an old case w/ new power supply. The hard drive, well, I'm not sure who's making hte IBM drives now if IBM isn't, but the drives I get from one of my buddies distributors are IBM drives, sure, I've heard some horror stories, and myself I do prefer Segate drives (old server is still using 4 segate drives, 9.1gb) and I've had that thing for ages, no probs... But I've also never had a prob with a newer IBM scsi drive... I'm running a "deathstar" in my p3 right now which I'm stuck using until insurance co helps replace my new p4 which decided to act as a lightning rod :() and I have no probs with it, never have. And, considering when I can save 120 CAD$ on a drive, turns out to 240 w/ the 2 of 'em, I'll gladly go that route until I have a problem. And when/if that happens, odds are I won't be using 'em again. :D

Did you build it? How did it turn out?

actually, dont you have to do some sort of unlocking on XPs for them to work as MPs?
