I hae just got the order from the owner of the company to install a web content filtering package of my choice. Now my question is what would be a good setup to use? Also what way of filtering would be the best and most approperate filter for a work environment?

I have been in some environments that had an allow only list which sucks for looking for parts/software and others that had a block only specifics whice is nicer but rather limited. again any ideas or sugestions other then saying that they are installed and not doing any thing?

set everyone's homepage to DT :)

what is the software do they let you set certain limits or do you have to set the filters based on words?

Ooooo... man you are in for some fun. Hope you don't have too many users. Tuning a content filter could be quite time consuming depending on number of users and allowed/disallowed sites.

Basically I am looking at combining Squid (http://www.squid-cache.org/) and Privoxy (http://www.privoxy.org/) to do all the work. The sites that they want blocked right now are all PICS rated as either porn on gambling. For the most part the config files will be pretty easy and using squid as a front end will bw a boon and reduce the slowdown. The problem that I see is that we have ~500 users in the company but mostly the day poeple alrady stay off the non work sites, it is just the users.

This all started when we were asked if we can find a software solution to slow down or even stop the spyware and pop-ups.

Right now I have a working configuration on the laptop but I need to find a way to use urlblacklist in the system. I know that I can hand code the latest list into the web based interface but since new lists come out with every new virus/spyware release I want to script it to update on a nightly basis.

you should send out a IT MANDATE that everyone should be using Firefox instead of IE. Just direct them to our thread regarding the differences..

why not consider an Router/server that ALL data is scrubbed..
Any key words, would just not be transferred.
cookies and all could be cleaned/blocked/evaluated.
