I usually use either smartripper or DVDecryptor. Between those two I'm usually able to rip just about anything under the sun. If youre still having trouble you can use vStrip. I just recommend Smartripper, it's easy and does the job very well.

My encoder of choice is Nandub. You can get some sweet output if you've got all the settings right.

And really the only place you'd ever need to go to learn about this type of thing is http://doom9.org
He's got a guide to everything under the sun and all the tools you'll ever need to download.

DivX 3.xx Guides-> http://doom9.org/divx3-guides.htm
DivX 5 Guides-> http://doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm

Main Guides page-> http://doom9.org/guides.htm

These should point you in the right direction....
And a ripper simply takes the .VOB files off of the DVD; using a program like Gordian Knot or Nandub will allow you to encode the source (the .vobs) into an .avi video file. Gordian is relatively simple...it might take a little practice. I like Nandub personally, but it takes a little longer to setup. Another plus of gordian knot is that the software package includes all the programs you will need to create the movie. Timewise, on a good system you can encode a 1.5 hour movie in about 2.5-3.5 hours...but it also depends on what method of encoding you are doing, etc. I usally just leave it going over night or when I at class for a long period of time.

Keep asking if you have questions, good luck:D

Man you guys are lucky. I want a DVD -R drive!

Do those programs use the DeCSS code? Maybe they are only *legal* programs. :(

Gordian knot is a really easy front-end UI that's powered by some of the best freeware program for ripping DVD.

I'm currently ripping anime DVDs right now with great success.

The major pain comes when you want the Japanese sound track along with subtitles. Most programs won't allow you to do that easily, but GKnot is but a few more clicks away.

The 2-pass encoding is rather slow (about 4 hours for a 90 minute movie on an AMD XP2000).

The best way I found is to que up all the chapters, then let it rip overnight.

One big problem with ripping DVD is its mercilessly spin your DVD for hours during the ripping process. After one session, the DVD (and the DVD drive) is rather hot. If you rip DVD often, be prepare to buy a new drive. YMMV.

What about an expanded cooling system for the drive to extend the life of it? Anyone have ideas or heard about products out there that will allow people to do this?

I'm gonna go and agree with ruri on the gordian knot....I've used it a couple times with a good degree of success.:cool:

And it shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes or so to rip a dvd....so it really shouldn't be spinning for hours

Sounds like a great program. I have not tried ripping a DVD movies since a year ago and it took 12 hours+ to rip the stupid movie. Anyone remember those days?

not really, unless you mean rip+encode...then yes, yes I do....bleh

But, yes it is a good program, give it a try if you want to start makin' divx films (or start again)

Lets see I think all you have to do is hit the encode button right ?

LOL

I found this link that has a list of free and maybe shareware versions of DVD encoders. I'm going to take a big leap here and say that most are based on the DivX codec, which uses MPEG-4 technology . Try a couple of these out and let us know what you thought of them. Maybe write a little reveiw and we will post it on the site.

Here is a link to the DivX site.

If you want the best quality encoder go with Nandub...it is a little more difficult to setup than Gordian Knot, but great output when performed correctly. Thats just my opinion of course. Check the Doom9.net forums and you'll find a ton of people that are much more enthusiastic about than I.
