iPod only offers one choice for compatibility with the online music stores: iTunes. If you get a player that supports secure WMA, then you will have support for all the music stores using RealPlayer.

I have the Zen Micro and I am pretty happy with it. The earbuds are a little too large for me and hurt my ears after a while though.

I would look at the Zen Micro as an alternative to the iPod. It also supports MS Plays For Sure which is cool.
