321 Studios recently released their one-step DVD backup software, DVDXCOPY. I have been playing around with it and here's my mini-review.
DVD -> DVD copying has been a major PITA due to copy-protection and the lack of adequate software. The normal procedure is to extract out the VOBs, then burn it to a DVD-blank, using DVDDecryper, IfoEdit and and DVD-authoring program.
DVDXCOPY eliminates all those laborious step by making DVD to DVD copying a 3 click procedure.
When the program starts, a warning screen pop up to warn that the program should only be used to backup your own DVD and if you agree, click to continue (click #1)
Then the program reads the DVD content, displaying all the tracks it found. You then highlight all the tracks you want to copy, or just click the 'all' button (click #2).
The program proceeds to rip the DVD to a temp file (typically your C: drive). This process takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on your DVD drive speed and CPU power.
Finally, if everything is okay, the program will ask you if you want to skip the disk, cancel the copy or burn away. (click #3).
The program will then begin the burning process, taking about 60-80 minutes (1X speed) for a complete burn.
The finished disk in almost an exact duplicate of the original, except for one very annoying warning screen at the very beginning when you play the disk. It's like that FBI warning, except that the screen informs the viewer that the DVD they're watching is a backup copy made with DVDXCOPY. In my mind, it's more an advertisement than a warning screen.
So far I have made several successful copies with the program, but YMMV.
