The stocks of major antivirus software vendors were trading lower today after Microsoft announced the release of beta anti-spyware technology it bought in December and said it would begin giving away an improved tool to remove worms and viruses from its customers' computers.

Following Microsoft's news, shares of Symantec were down by more than 6 percent and shares in rival McAfee were down by around 4 percent in Thursday's late-afternoon trading. While the free antivirus and virus removal tools are not an immediate threat to the products from those companies, the releases could signal tougher times ahead for desktop security vendors, as Microsoft uses its size and influence to expand into markets now dominated by those companies, industry experts say.

Yea like MS can keep up with antivirus updates. They have hard enough time patching windows as it is, releasing fixes a month or more after the flaw has been discovered. If they expect to remain competitive in the antivirus market their updates must happen daily or weekly like all the other companies.

Spyware is software that collects personal information from you without your knowledge or permission. The information spyware collects can range from all the Web sites you visit to sensitive information including user names and passwords. You could become vulnerable to spyware if you download music from file-sharing programs, free games from sites you don't trust, or other software programs from unknown sources.

On January 6th 2005, Microsoft introduced the first public beta release of its solution to the spyware problem. Dubbed Microsoft AntiSpyware, the application was born after the purchase of Giant Software Company, which developed their anti-spyware application. Microsoft AntiSpyware offers plenty of features which is sure to turn some heads. Not only does it scan for spyware/adware, it can also offer real-time protection which prevents spyware from being installed in the first place. Though Microsoft’s new toy offers really nice feature as we are about to explore, how well does it match up against the already known spyware removal champs; Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D? Let us find out

I'd love to...
REALLY...
But, Im so TIRED of betaware, and the trojan wars, I THINK I will wait.
Give it a chance to FALL FLAT, or BEAT everyone into the ground.

How many AV have you EVEr used... Im counting C64, C64/128, amiga, Intell...
I get to 12 and stop counting..
And when it FAILS...how can you REALLy tell.
REDo your whole system??? YUCK.

I'v seen some of the best, and they wont do it no more.
setup is a killer, as it does a checksome of EVERY program, and a library of the system, and watch for any changes. its cumbersome(no worse then NORTON tho) and it WORKS.
