I'm looking to get a new display device to go along with my new cutting edge system I have just refcently completed. I am looking in the market for a 17'' LCD Flat panel; perhaps someone can tell me where to get a GREAT deal online, I am looking for low prices of course, but also a good value. Someone point me in the right direction please!

Will you be playing games with the 17" LCD display or not? If you are, then I suggest you get a monitor with a high refresh rate and resolution. Most LCD monitors are terrible for gaming.

As much as I hate Dell, I will say they sometimes have great pricing on computer electronic gears whenever they post a dollar-off code combined with a percentage-off code.

For example, a week ago, you could have gotten a Dell E171FP 17" LCD display for $415 if you used both a 20% off coupon combined with a $30 off $400 coupon. Shipping, which is often a deal-breaker for me, is typically free from Dell. And no taxes in certain states.

If you missed this deal, just wait a couple of weeks and a new one will pop up. It always does (well for the last 2 years anyway).

Another option is to wait for Staples / OfficeMax / OfficeDepot to offer an LCD loss-leader with a MIR. Then you pop their $40 off $200 coupons and grab it for cheap. Of course, this roube requires rebates, so the Dell route is by far safer.

Good luck.

I like viewsonic LCD's. I did a quick comparison on Cnet.

At Best Buy, they have an Alienware demo computer set up with a Samsung 18" LCD monitor. The games on the demo machine look absolutely stunning on this monitor with no lag typically associated with LCD monitors and a low refresh rate. I didn't bother to look at the model number on the display, but next time I am there, I will write it down.

maybe you are meaning exactly what you say, but are you meaning to say pixel response rate as opposed to refresh rate? I think that is what generally causes things to "lag" on screen....the lower the response rate the better. lmk if i'm wrong

Yes instead of how long it takes for the electron gun to address every pixel on the screen per second it is now how long it takes the x and y register to change the voltage on every pixel.

So what is the difference between a refresh rate and a pixel response rate then? From what I can tell most LCD monitors max out at 1024x768 resolution with a 65Hz refresh rate.

Can someone explain the difference to me please?

That is what I tried to do in the post above. Let me rephrase it.

When you consider LCD's pixel response = refresh rate.

A 1024 x 768 resolution is the number of pixels.

Make sense?

Ok, thats what I thought in the first place. I know what Refresh rate and resolution is, but when he mentioned pixel rate, I thought he meant something different.

I will have to look for that presentation that I did. Its got to be on one of my back up disks around here somewhere. It was on Organic LCD's the kinds used now in car stereo's. They can do some crazy stuff these days with displays. I saw some clothes that had giant glowing letters on them a while back on Mike's List.

So did you ever get a new LCD and if so which one did you get? they are all coming down in price which is a good thing. I have noticed a similarity between the 17" LCD displays in the sub $500 market. A. the max pixel refresh rate appears to be about 60 Hz, B. There is DVI inputs available.

I like the new Sony and Samsung LCD displays.
