Help needed for a home search assistant victim

Hello all.

I am not sure if this will work as I have never used a forum.
I have a home search assistant infection on my system.
I have been working through the different removal routines. But seriously hesitate to remove files from my system. I hope anyone of you can help me.

Download Spybot, AdAware (Links Above)

Delete what they find, Remove cookies, Temporary Internet files,Empty Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new log, thanks..........Jim :vivi

I have run ad aware several times
And I am in the process of running spybot.
I Will post a new log shortly after removing temp int files.

Hello Jim

I did what you told me to do.
It seems nomatter how often I run these tools
it will always find suspect files.
Spybot was not able to remove 8 possible threats from the memory of my machine.
I have dumped cookies , temp internet files and the dustbin. The HijackThis logfile looks like this now.

I sincerely hope you will be able to sse what is wrong.

Still In Safe Mode Delete all Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Do a Defrag on your C Drive, Empty recycle bin.

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disc Defragment

Hi Jim,

Just letting you know I am still here.
My machine has been defragging all night and this morning I had no time to post a new Hijackthis log.
I will do so this evening. (local time)
One question though.. Is it OK to use the internet explorer on the infected computer to post logs etc.?
Or should I use another computer.
BTW if all of this works I am going to send you a bunch of dutch tulips.

I dont think its a problem, They may have been deleted when you dumped your temporary internet files.

You should be able to use the infected computer to post logs. If you are unable to, use the other one.......Jim

Can it be things are getting better already?
explorer seems to open faster and startpage doesn't show this crap anymore
just a blank page ( i set it up to be a blank page) frankly I don't dare to do much, like browsing the internet. This thing really got me scared.
Any advice on how to protect myself against another hijack?
Ooh well maybe first things first and get rid of this thing first.
I believe i recognised some leftover trouble in the latest log.
But i will let you decide on what to do next

I heared promising news about the microsoft antispyware beta.
I have installed it and ran the in depth scan.
It found 8 threats and reported them removed.
System seems ok can you look at the hijackthis log I made after running this microsoft tool.
I hope i didn't mess up your attempts of cleaning my system from spyware

This is a new problem, I just did a little research and found this on another webpage. Its worth a try.

Open up Hijack This in normal mode. Place a check next to these and Click Fix Checked

Make sure all other programs and webpages are closed Only HijackThis should be open.

Please reboot into safe mode

Go To Disc Cleanup

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disc Cleanup

Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Reboot

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.

I am sorry for not immediatly responding to your post.
I got stuck at work for a few days, but I am back now.
I Hope you are still here.
After my daughters ( 4 yrs) bath I will do what you told me to.
I believe the 2 R0's were made by microsofts antispysoftware. But I will delete them anyway.
Sexyloops is my starting page and it is a site about flyfishing :)) . I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

first of all thank you very very much
I have installed spyware blaster I hope it does what it promises.
One more question tho
In my start - controlscreen - add and remove software I still find entries like 'search extender' and 'shopping wizzard' they seem to take up quite a lot of diskspace.
But I can't use the remove option because it links to a page that doesn't seem to exsist. Do you have a tip for that??

Not sure Martin, If you can find the file name you may be able to delete them manually. Or if they show up in your log. By the sound of the names it sounds like some kind of Spyware.Do these show in your Program Files?.........Jim

No I can't find them in my program files.
I did a search for them and still could not find them.
I am at work now but at home I have a tweak guide for XP I believe I have read something about this there.
If I find a solution I will let you know.

This is what I did and they are gone
I found some other leftovers there as well
Deleted them in the process

Click Start, Run and type regedit.
Within the registry open the below key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall


Within the above registry key select the program you wish to uninstall from the right side of the window.
