View Full Version : CoolWWWSearch Nightmare

Hello!

I seem to be infected with a very resilient strain of a cool web search type spyware. Essentially, my browser is always hi-jacked to some sort of "search" engine home page. Currently it is pointing to... "http://letgohome.com/hp.htm?id=9," but it has also been the "wineto..." page as well. I have tried to run Spybot S&D, CWShredder, and some other program called SpySubtract. Spybot usually finds problems, but they always come back right away. CWShredder no longer recognizes that there is a CWS bug of any kind, and SpySubtract uses CWshredder as it's cool web killer (so no dice there). I have updated to the latest definitions/versions for all of those programs.

So here I am, beating my head against a wall over this damn thing. I humbly turn to the community and ask for your help in getting this garbage off my machine. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you could provide.

Here is my HJT log from this morning.

Please let me know if you need any other information. Thanks!!!

Josh

Very hard to kill, some people said Trend Micro has worked.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Need to kill this first, It will just continue to reload.Give it a try then post a new log.........Jim

I just had a box in that was so infected I had to reinstall os. cws would detect nothing. or if I were online it would throw up an operation error. Spybot would detect delete and it would reload. I hacked the reg to try and get ahead of it, to no avail! The only thing showing under hjt were the start pages being changed! no loader showing that I could find. Trend micro was clean. I tried the new AdawareSE it detected over 800 pieces of crap after I thought I'd supermanned the HD. It hung on the cw files. The system was so corrupted it couldn't be saved.
I think I'm spending an average of 4-6 hrs on spyware cleanup now. CRAZY!!

I feel your pain MCZ!!! These CWS bugs would drive even Ghandi to pick up a gun and fill his hard drive full of lead.

Anyway, I took Nightowl's advice and the never-ending dll string seems to be gone. Please see my latest HJT log. What are my next steps?

Thanks!!!

Actually, I was just looking at my newest HJT log and the dll string is actually there....it's just shortened!!! See line item O20.

Also, I found a little quirk with Trend Micro I should pass along. It continually finds and "removes" a certain spyware called ADW_SUPERSPDR.A. Everytime I run the spyware scan, it finds this one item and then "removes" 18-20 threats associated with it. But of course, they all appear to come back when I re-scan. Maybe that will help in deciphering my log. :)

Well it did get shorter. Thats a good thing. If it gets too long your comnputer would end up like the one mcz stated above. Lets see if we can kill it now.

Reboot To Safe Mode (tap F8 on Startup)

Delete this file

Still In Safe Mode Place a check next to each of these and click Fix Checked.

Still In Safe Mode Delete all Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, Do a Defrag on your C Drive, Empty recycle bin.

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disc Defragment

Then Reboot and post a new log..........Jim

Maybe we can kill it while its small. Fingers crossed. :vivi

Those crossed fingers (and your good advice) did the trick!!! As far as I can tell, my problem seems to be wiped out. :cheers

At first, I couldn't delete that *dll.dll file as it said the program was in use. However, I was able to rename it...so I changed the file to SUCKIT.TXT. :P

I followed the rest of your steps after that (except the defrag, which I'm going to do now). Once I restarted the computer, I went back to my suckit.txt file and was able to delete it. I ran HJT and it came up clean!!!

Then I checked my IE and the home page hijack was gone. My final test was to re-run the spyware scan on Trend Micro. My first run through showed just one threat associated with that SUPERSPDR.A bug. I fixed it and that seemed to finally cleanse the whole thing. I re-ran the scan and it came up clean. Skeptically, I rebooted to re-test it all. IE was clean, HJT was clean, and TM scan was clean...again! Needless to say, I'll be keeping a close eye on things for couple weeks.

However, I am extremely grateful to you Nightowl. I say to you...HUZZAH!!! (sorry, renfair is in town and I'm in the mood)

To all of you browsing these forums, follow the advice of the fine contributors here. They know what they're doing. :thumb

Here is my newest HJT log, for reference...

To Nightowl
I am not as sharp as some of these folks and am trying to rid myself of the letgohome hijacker. I attempted to do what you suggested in safe mode, but I cannot find the files you show....R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main, searchurl = http://letgohome.com/sp.htm?id=9
How do I find them??

To all
Just wanted to say thanks. I bought the hijack product xoftspy and it worked like a charm. Only thing is it will not delete everything unless you run it in safe mode!
