I personally prefer AMD, but I'm not sure if u want an Intel system or AMD system.
Prices on AMD's have dropped recently.
I would definately suggest getting 512MB of DDR333 ram. Are you looking for any particular manufacturer?
Any preference on a vid card?
Any preference on case size/type?
There have also been plenty of hard drive deals as well as CDRW deals.

I would go AMD route most def., since new Intel chips will set you back $800. A Athlon 2200 XP would be sufficient for what you want to do. Get a motherboard with Ultra DMA 100 and 66. X-Oxide makes a really cool clear case, but it is going to run about the same price as the processer and Motherbaord. The cheaper versions of Viewsonics are great for how much they cost. I bought a 17inch for less than $150 shipped. Another $150 for a 120 WD drive would bring the total up to around $900. Now you could spend as much as $400 on a video card. I'm not sure on prices, but I bet a older model ge-force card would be your best bet, say around $100. Another $80 - 100 for other hardware stuff that doesn't come with the case and you woul d have one kick ass system for about $1000.

Alot of people will give you good comments about gaming recommendations, but let me toss in a few comments about editing (video I presume).
Get as much RAM as you can afford. Video editing sucks up as much RAM as you got.
Use Win 2K and avoid 98/ME.
A 7200rpm drive is a must. I have good luck with the 8MB WD.
The P4 will give the highest performance for video editing if the program supports SIMD2, but the Athlon will give you the biggest-bang-for-buck.
For video edting, a dual-monitor setup is AWESOME. You place the output screen on one monitor and the program (Premiere, MediaStudio Pro, Xpress) on the other screen.
If you want to do it on the cheap, look at Ebay for used Amiga 1080S monitor. It's a 14" screen that supports composite and sound in. Use the composite out of your video card to drive it and run dual-monitor setup in Win2K.
Good luck.
Editing??
Audio, video, 3D, games, Camera inputs, Pics, What.
Ram...AS much as possible..(PERIOD)
Rather let the system do it in RAM then on the HD.
Video, Look at the Matrox. So, what its 2D.
What resoloutions? HIGHER the res. the MORE ram.
directX, or openGL.
there are a FEW boards out htere, that will let you have 2 GIGS of ram.
HD's, SCSI is great, and RAID(IDE or scsi) worth the time, effort, and backups.
Ruri.. I think you mean an 80GB drive, not 8MB.

If you want to use it for editing than I wouldn't worry too much about RAM, a Bigger HD and Dual Monitors; although all those things certainly help, the most important piece of Hardware that you need to buy is a video capture card. Check CNET or something for what you are looking for. Those things get expensive right quick. You could easily pay as much as the system for a decent card. Pinnacle is a good company to check out.
