I remember a while ago, after XP was released, that I read an article about how XP hogs something like 10% of your bandwidth for its own purposes if it needs it.

They had a quick tutorial on how to turn it off and get your full speed of your connection back.

Anyone remember how to do that?

I use a prog for this, called Download accellerator. It changes this feature.
You might go to MS, and check into there files, and WADE thru the msg, about it.

I like FreshDownload better than Download Accelerator. You should try it out. No ads, free to try and register.

I read about this too. I would check out www.dslreports.com or www.speedguide.net for details, probably just some registry settings you need to change.

Boy..those were some bad links Ioman.. one was "This domain registered at Dotster" and the other seemed to be some type of ads for DSL.

ACKK, sorry. I fixed the links. I needed to add an "S" on DSL reports and its speedguide.net not .com.

Stupid domain companies always are taking advantage of the misspelling.

Sorry bro.

The cuplrit here I believe is the QOS RSVP.

Run services.msc and set QOS RSVP to disabled.

If you go into the properties of your connection and click on the networking tab there is also a QOS Packet Scheduler.

XP home doesn't install this by default.

You can try removing that as well.

Some ISP's recommend that you have it installed but I don't really see any benefit.

You can also try those MTU tweaks but those apply to all flavors of windows and I don't think they are what might cause this little "problem".

ya but, why i thought linux ran faster was because they had optimized the OS to download faster rather than browse faster. i forget how it works exactly, but it seemst to me that the MTU tweaks would fix it to make your system to be optimized closer to what linux is set at.

is the " QOS RSVP " enabled in win2k I wonder? i will have to check it out and let u guys know.

Oh yeah, btw... the MTU tweaks are mostly so you can get a minor boost in performance for dial-up networking from what I have read before.

This is because MTU in most flavors of windows are setup to be optimal for ethernet by default.

I think thats what I was looking for. However, I'm not on dial-up, so not sure what type of gain i'll get. :(

I found this while I was surfing the link that Ioman posted.

Windows 2000 and XP are built on NT technology and both are generally better optimized for networking than Windows 9x and even NT4. Regardless, both XP and Windows 2000 are still configured with respect to Ethernet rather than high speed Internet connections. Here, you will find specific information on how to optimize the Windows 2000/XP Registry for Cable Modems, DSL, or any similar type of broadband Internet connection.

Customizing the Windows Registry assumes some proficiency in tuning Windows configuration files. If you don't feel comfortable editing it, please download the following patch, which will add all the parameters and set all the optimal values in the Registry automatically.

Isn't reg editing fun ?? LOL
