Motherboard and sempron cpu

I have a four year old computer with a gigabyte 7zxe mb which had a socket A duron/athlon 1ghz cpu until it started to go very slow. Seems like it overheated due to build up og crap in the heat sink.
I have a new AMD sempron 2400+ socket A cpu and want to put it into this motherboard. Is this possible without blowing anything up ?

yup. you might need a bios update to properly identify the cpu, but it'll work.
