are the new 'sleek' models usually loud? is the problem usually contained to a few brands?

i was looking at a canon zr series. a lot of user reviews had comments about the internal fan; i didn't like the way it felt so i didn't pick one up. i'm just curious if it's an issue with most consumer dv cams.

I think the Canon ZR series is fine. I used to own one before upgrading to a better Sony. I don't think there's a fan though, are you referring to the 'whirring' noise you get when you rewind the MiniDV tape? If so, then it's normal.
