I have a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S309. It's worked perfectly thus far(I've had it for about 3 1/2 months) except for a power problem. It will no longer charge while the laptop is in use, or even on. I must completely turn off the computer in order for it to charge. Even if the laptop is in hibernate, it will not charge. Oh, and when it is on and I plug it in, it recognizes that it is plugged in, however, it does nothing about it. It simply says: "On-line, discharging." I was wondering if this is a "feature" of the Toshiba Satellite or if it simply a problem with mine. Thanks in advance for your help!

I have satellite M35X-S309, and it has exactly the same problem...
when the power is plugged on, the battery shows "On-line, Discharging" - so I am not able to charge the battery.

Have you found the solution so far?

Thank you,
Alex

I have not yet found a solution. I called Toshiba, and they were a pain in the a**, so I hung up. I really want to find out what's wrong, because it's pissing me off.

Anyone else know anything about this?

Thank you,
Orkatist

I have noticed that LAPTOPS generally dont charge when plugged in and running, anymore.
They have to be OFF. And the battery SHOULD not be Loaded when using the transformer AND running the computer.
should say that in the paper work..
PULL battery when in use and operating the laptop.

I can go look it up on the net, but I think you got the book.

Once the battery is charged for the first time, avoid leaving the
computer plugged in and turned off for more than a few hours
at a time. Continuing to charge a fully charged battery can
damage the battery.
TECHNICAL NOTE: When your computer is using all of the
power provided by the AC adapter to run applications,
features, and devices, the recharging of the battery cannot
occur. Your computer’s Power Management utility can be used
to select a power level setting that reduces the power required
for system operation and will allow the battery to recharge.

ONCE the battery is CHARGED, REMOVE IT

This points to a battery problem. Do not charge the batt once its fully charged. I damaged a IBM Thinkpad battery in the same manner before.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173 and it's having power-up issues too. I've been searching the web about the problem and it looks like Toshiba laptops have this problem across the board with a LOT of their models. Some folks have found fixes that work for their computers but the fixes don't necessarily seem to solve the problem for every computer of the same model, even. I've seen everything blamed for this power-up problem, from static electricity to batteries to HDD connectors to the touchpad.

From where I sit, it seems like the problem isn't with anyone one *piece* of the computer but Toshiba's computers in general. Even Toshiba can't figure out why their laptops behave the way they do, according to some folks who've tried to call/write them about it. If you look on eBay, nearly 3/4 of the Toshiba laptops for sale on there say 'won't power up, don't know why'.

My guess is that you will just have to purchase a new battery. Although its Lithium-ion, only recharge it when its close to empty, otherwise you could damage it.
