I have a Toshiba Sateliite S1800-400 running with Windows ME. It has worked perfectly well until a few days ago when I had difficulty getting it to start.
On the panel of 5 lights, the first 3 (working from the left) are all lit up, the 5th one flickers momentarily and then nothing. However, sometimes it starts normally but then after a period of time I get the blue error message screen and can't turn the machine off.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
ya,
BUY a new laptop.
Win ME is obsolete and has NO backing from MS. 2 years after release they DROPPED it..
Sence you aint got a stable system, to do any checks, its TOAST..
If you can get and LOAD win 2000 or XP...maybe. But Im going for a hardware error.

Had concluded new pc needed. Am researching market.
Problme now is that I need to get some stuff off the hard drive. Had stupidly forgotten to back up content of e-mail folders.
When I can getthe machine to start now get into the dos prompt with message regarding missing file.
Need a temporary fix to finish getting stuff off the hard drive.
Anyone know if it would be possible to take the hard drive out and connect itto another machine?
THAT is possible.
There is even adaptor to hook to desktop..
Make sure to set it as SLAVE drive, and you can read ALL the data you wish.
TRY not to run from the drive(it is possible) as if there is an infection on it, it will INFECT you again.
There is ALSO a remote case, for using HD from a USB port. Even a firewire version.

ECA is correct. I think one of the best options is to get an external hard drive enclosure (with a USB port). Then you can simply connect the hard drive directly and read the data you need.
