Check out this thread:

i had the first of the 2 of these for 4 months... then it literally blow up, and started to smoke.... hence i got a new 1, that one was dead out of the box, so i sent it back to get a third, whihc worked for 5 days before it too became unreadable. Maxtor needs to get its act together. btw i had to pay a total of $100 usd in order to meet all their shipping constraints for the 3 times i sent them back.

For obvious reasons I think this guy is full of it. I have had several Maxtor hard drives and have had no problems. But for this guy to have so many go bad on him is BS IMO. What do you guys think? I think he is ruining them himself.

Maxtor is decent..
But they get some BAD batches...
The problem with that, is sending it back and forth, and STILL getting from the SAME BATCH.
I think there QC sucks..
But what can you do??
You take 1 in 10,000 HD off the line, and Stick it in a machine, WRITE it, and read it 100 times and say the WHOLE batch is good.

I had a maxtor drive, and it worked fine... I have seen them crap out a lot before.. def prefer WD and their warranty

i've had several maxtor drives that are still running after 5+ years with comp rarely being powered off and no hard drive spin down.

I've had two Maxtor drives and they sure worked fine. The ones that fail me are usually Seagate drives (but their latest Barracudas are ok). :)

The only drives that I've had *never* fail on me were a couple Maxtors. I'd like to get some new Seagate drives though.
