View Full Version : The END is near, for one company anyway.
Satellite television company Hughes Electronics will shut down its DirecTV DSL service in the next few months, forcing about 160,000 customers to find broadband services elsewhere, the company announced Friday.

Real glad I didn't sign up with them... I'll wait for DSL.
GM is just getting Direct TV ready for a quick sale to whoever wanted it now that Dish Network has thrown in the towel with their proposed merger.
Satellite DSL is useful for someone living in BFE, but for anyone with access to DSL/Cable, Direct TV DSL makes absolutely no sense.

My understanding was that the FCC would not allow Dish Networks or Echo Star Communications buy out DirecTV due to monopoly reasons. I also do not see any other company buying out DirecTV, other than maybe AOL/Time Warner (they like to buy good companies and turn them to **** don't they?). What if ATT bought out DirecTV? Then they could own every angle.
But seriously, it was stupid for DirecTV to sell DSL in the first place. They need to spend their money on satellite broadband and make that service affordable and competitive. There is no money is reselling DSL bandwidth.....
These types of services are Great, except for gaming.
One of the companies, FINALLY, had the IDEA(after lots of complaints) to make there service MOBLE. For those in RV's, camping, on the road, sales forces. It was great, that they FINALLY dropped the idea that THERE service HAD to be stationary.
THIS is the BEST selling point that they have. 2way sat, and you can use it ANYWHERE, that you have 'LINE of sight' with the equator(beware of trees). I dont know WHY they dont advert it more.
How much fun is it, to change ISP's...NOT.

Uhhh where ?
BFE=
Anyplace that dont have, cant get, WILL never get a hard wire.
Hardwire= Phone line, power line, cable line, fiber optic, ect...
Top of Mt. Olympus.
5 miles from NoWhere(there is a place called NoWhere).
Even with Cable, DSL, and wireless. You MUST know that Over 60% of the US will NOT have access, except(maybe) 56k. And out of THAT 60%, HALF DONT have access to that. A PLACE were CELL phones DONT WORK.
Cell phones= 9600 baud.

Another thing to consider is that DirecTV is probably leasing the DSL lines from companies like Verizon. A lot of smaller DSL companies have gone under do to Verizons high rates. Yet, the law says that Verizon cannot monopolize the DSL lines and own the area all to themselves. Looks like Verizon etc.. are winning one way or another.

So does this mean that Satellite DSL is not a viable product?
What is going to happen to all the Satellites that they have in orbit? Any chances of another company buying them and their equipment?
What would be cool is to sell a access anywhere in the world service sold through a ISP, instead of a stand alone service.

Do not confuse satellite broadband with DirecTV DSL, as they are two completely different services. Satellite broadband is just that, broadband which comes thru your dish. DirecTV DSL is DSL thru the phone lines, the name of the compant is just DirecTV.
So the DSL part of their business is gone, their broadband satellite service is still up. Very expensive I might add.

So let me get this right. They used satellite service for the downstream and the phone line for the upstream ?
