A network problem that cable giant Comcast is having trouble fixing has resulted in disrupted service for some of its 7 million high-speed Internet customers across the country, including more than 400,000 in Washington state.

Comcast spokesman Steve Kipp last night couldn't say when engineers would have the problem solved. The problem, involving Comcast computers that help users find Web pages, started last Thursday and has occurred intermittently since. It is also affecting e-mail service.

Kipp acknowledged it is a significant issue but said not all customers are affected. Still, a recording on Comcast's customer-service lines advised callers last night that the company was experiencing a higher volume of calls than normal, and that a "global situation" with its high-speed Internet service "may prevent your ability to access Web pages."

Kipp declined to make any blanket statement about crediting inconvenienced customers. "We will deal with customers when they call us and work with each individual," he said.

Comcast's customer-service number is 877-824-2288.

"Kipp declined to make any blanket statement about crediting inconvenienced customers. "We will deal with customers when they call us and work with each individual," he said. "

That is complete BS.

<-- Effected with that last night. Once I could manage to get online, found that it was a DNS issue (Comcast did something, happened last week too) and prompty switched to a different DNS server and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

I find it highly unlikely that Joe-User is gonna do this and the attitude from Comcast that I've gleaned from this and other recent articles leaves me wanting. It makes me frown, because in the past I've usually had good ISP service from them...bleh

I am usually very happy with Comcast. Good customer service, fast internet speeds. Maybe this Kip guy just needs to be canned and Comcast should hire a new PR guy.

I'd hope that he just couldn't make a statement about credits this soon after the issue cropped up...can't have a spokesperson making promises the company won't back up.
::fingers crossed::

After experiencing three nights of network outages in less than a week, BetaNews has learned that in at least one case in southeast Michigan, a customer received a credit of $2.86 on their bill to compensate for the two days of service he complained about.

While the number may seem arbitrary, it's actually the $42.95 monthly charge divided by 30, which yields a $1.43 a day fee for access to the service.

Better than nothing I guess.

I've been effected by this almost every day. Only lasts about an hour or so each, time but a couple times it lasted more then 5 hours.

Better than nothing I guess.

Just deduct it from the bill...It's about what I would expect, except that it has happened more than just two days.

Dang: I don't know if you've changed your DNS, but I've been using 4.2.2.2 or really 4.2.2.x since these problems've started.

I've been effected by this almost every day. Only lasts about an hour or so each, time but a couple times it lasted more then 5 hours. Grab a spare box and set up a caching DNS server. I had intermittent DNS problems with Charter DNS servers a while back and put Bind 9 on an ancient AMD K-6 box... no DNS problems since.
