I'm in the market for an MP3 player (yeah I know, it's about time  ). I'm hearing some good things about Phillips but also know a lot of folks like the IPod. What are people's general thoughts on the two companie's basic models--how do they compare?

I really like the iPod, but I hate that I have to use iTunes with it. I think the new iRiver H10 or Creative Zen Micro players are great, as long as you update their firmware to the latest version.
I have heard good things about the Philips, but they are hard to find and I am not sure how good the tech support will be once the player is discontinued.
i have a philips based player (mpio brand) and it sounds great with an amazing battery life. the ipods are good, but pricey; just go to a store that has a few offerings and try navigating their menus to see what you like.

I have one of the 4th gen iPods, and it's pretty good. It has its own share of problems and features I don't like, but in the end, it does what it's supposed to do, and it does it well.
I use the winamp plugin (instead of iTunes) for mine, and it works great.
