ReplayTV came onto the market about a year ago and instantly competed with Tivo in the digital recorder market. Unable to compete with Tivo's strong marketing campaigns and deep pockets, ReplayTV silently slipped away. In August of 2001, Sonicblue acquired ReplayTV and plans on staying in all 12 rounds this time with a new knock out product.

Called the ReplayTV 4000, this is the first and only networked Digital Video Recorder. What a digital video recorder allows you to do is record your favorite television programs onto a hard disk automatically, every time they are on. This allows you to watch programs whenever you want. The ReplayTV 4000 can do this with a broadband connection and no monthly fees.

The difference between the ReplayTV 4000 and other digital video recorders is the 4000's ethernet capabilities which allows you to do things such as store digital photos and show them on your television, or network multiple ReplayTV's together. With an ethernet connection you can connect multiple ReplayTV's throughout your home and use a single remote. They will all be linked together so it doesn't matter which show you record on which recorder! If your friend has a ReplayTV 4000 hooked up to the internet as well, you can share shows with them by sending the show over the net.

What really caught our eyes here at Designtechnica was not only the broad band network capability but the progressive output, so if you have a High Definition (HDTV) then you can view movies and program in 480P progressive output and with the broad band connectivity, you can receive unique programs right over the net! The ReplayTV 4000 begins shipping this November.
