If you follow the latest tech news then you probably know that most technologies are getting smaller over time, and there will be many convergences amongst the myriad electronic devices as well. This week we take a look at Handsprings new Treo Communicator 180 and 180g.

The new Handspring Treo communicator converges your typical Palm Pilot into your standard cell phone giving you features that include Palm OS organizer, email, SMS text messaging, and wireless web all in your cell phone.

Treo1 Handspring is initially releasing the Treo communicator 180 and 180g in early 2002. The differences between the two models give the consumer a choice between Palm’s “graffiti” style input, or a keyboard with a QWERTY layout.

The most impressive point is the fact that the Treo comes with a robust 16mb of RAM in the tiny cell phone case. If you already have a Palm Pilot, there should be no worries as you can easily transfer your
files and settings to your new Treo Communicator. The web browser in the Treo is not your standard WAP cell phone browser, but rather Palms Blazer web browser, a fully HTML- and WML-compatible browser optimized for fast wireless access to a broad range of content.

We have played with various cell phones that claim to offer PDA functionalitites, but they usually offer little in compatibility with your average computer system, or they have insufficient memory. Most cell phones on the market that offer an integrated Palm OS have been bulky and expensive. It looks like this new Treo communicator is a good compromise in size and price.

treo3 Other features worth noting include POP3, Microsoft Exchange, AOL or Earthlink e-mail support, and a built-in speaker phone with 3-way calling which will help you on your conference call while picking the kids up from soccer.

The Treo Communicator 180 and 180g will be priced around $399. A color version of the Treo Communicator should be appearing in mid 2002, priced around $599. Look for a full featured review soon.
